I have a problem with my some of my gauges. Btw it's an 89 SOHC (not HUD). Whenever I drive it, usually the speedo doesn't work, and when it does it's all over the place. Also the temp gauge struggles to work. My question is, Is there a way to fix the cluster without buying a new one? I've already pulled it out of the dash. There isn't anything visibly worng with it. Would it just be less hassel to buy a used one for $50 or so? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd first test a known good speed sensor.

+1 to what greg said...the gauge cluster has a pretty low failure rate....the same thing cant be said for the speed sensor though...try swapping that bad boy out.

also there is a way to test the actual reading of the temp gauge...it does require removing it from the dash...all you have to do is ground it with the ignition on and it will do a full sweep of the gauge..caution..dont hold it there..the temp senidng unit is merely a dropping resistor to ground meaning it usually doesnt use a full ground cause all it will do is peg the gauge all the time..

speaking of clusters my friend told me this and i was wondering if it was true.? he said that if you have a swapped gauge cluster you could have exempt emissions? does anyone know if that is true
