Alright, I am hoping someone might be able to answer this question... I have searched but did not come up with anything... maybe I do not know the right terms to use???

I have a 1992 240SX SE with a heads up display speedo on the windshield and a digital speedo on the gauge cluster. I HATE the look of it and would much prefer to put in the standard cluster.

I have already got a standard cluster and wiring harness to swap in, but it is not a plug and play... already tried it... the standard wiring harness plugs into the exisitng clips just fine and is the correct size, but the tach and speedo do not work... everything else does.

Does anyone know if there is a way to make this work? Are there any wires that need to be cut or spliced?

Thanks a ton!!

okay ... on the backside of the gauge cluster where the harness plugs (3 of them) go into ... are you sure they are in the correct spots? .... mine did what your talking about and it was b/c I needed to switch the two outside plugs needed to be switched with one another

The second thing to note would be ... what year of 240sx did you get the cluster your wanting to use out of? ... and was it AUTO or MANUAL? ...

It was a pignose... wouldn't that make it an '89 or '90? I am not sure if it was auto or manual since I got it at a junkyard and the transmission was already pulled.

IIRC, the plugs were going into the correct spots, but I will double check to make sure.

You got the cluster from a pignose, you have a 1992....is not going to work. Find the right cluster for your car. You need a DOHC cluster.....

Maybe you all could help me with a similar issue. zerothread?id=195225I don't know if the original car is auto or manual, but mine is a '90 Manual. Will I have the same issues as 2K5Rex?

That's what I was afraid... no wires that I could splice or cut though, huh? Guess I'll get back to searching for one.

Both cluster are identical, but the speedo and tach are designed differently to work with different signals/different engines. If you can find the right speedo and tach...you can swap them and it will work. But that will be more work than trying to find the complete cluster. Swap with another person or put it up on Ebay and buy the right one. NO, wire splicing will not work.....

actually the speedo should work regardless of motor, the tach should work also but will be wack like you'll be revving at 2000rpms and the tach will display 500rpms. I have used all the clusters from SOHC Analog and Hud to DOHC Analog and Hud, everything worked except the tach when put on the wrong motor. I currently did away with my stock ecu in favor for a standalone and had to wire things up differently so now my tach works for whatever motor.

The reason the tach doesnt work from SOHC to DOHC is because the DOHC reads the rpms at a different voltage than the SOHC one.

I done some work with both types of HUD clusters and found that the speedo only worked on specific engine that they designed for.....also Nissan list both HUD modules with different part numbers and for each respective engine type. Not debating your posting, Bro....Im just presenting some facts, maybe the clusters I played with had other problems...

it shouldnt matter because the speedo is wired the same, and is the same part on all the trannies. My speedo worked with HUD or Analog on whichever motor.

IIRC, the speed sensors themselves are different. Not to mention the different ECU's send different signals.

The wiring sub-harness will work you just need the correct cluster for you car.

If I remember correctly the wiring diagram shows the Speedo sensor being seperate from the ecu, that it wires straight to the cluster. Thats how I wired my speedo because I dont use the stock ecu and my speedo worked flawlessly regardless of motor as I had a KA24E and swapped to a CA18DET, everything worked flawlessly except the tach and regardless of ecu or ems. However I did use the corresponding subharness that went with the cluster so a SOHC cluster was used a SOHC sub harness as well as DOHC with DOHC harness.

the ca18 uses a different speed sensor than the dohc KA

the only thing different on it is the gear on the end due to the CA transmission 5th gear. Other than that its the same sensor, its wired the same, all the S13 speedo are wired the same way. All the S13 chassis trannies are the same except for the CA's 5th gear which is shorter.
