After purchasing my 2007 Versa this past January I've found myself in a living situation where I do very little, and I mean VERY LITTLE driving. My last gas fill-up was in mid-July and now in mid-October I still have half a tank left.

A neighbor suggested today that I should start using a gasoline stabilizer to prevent the gas from breaking down and "varnishing" in the tank which he says will gunk up the car's fuel delivery system. He specifically mentioned a product called Sta-Bil. My questions -- first, is he correct and second, can the gasoline stabilizer itself cause a problem? Thanks in advance.

The thing with fuel stabilizer is when you are not driving or using and engine for extended period of time, then it is recommended to use it. It will not hurt to put it in there if it would make you feel better but it is mostly used in vehicles and machinery that are seasonal. This would include lawnmowers, chain saws, and weed eaters. The best idea idea is just to start your car periodically and let it idele for a few minutes.

here is a website that recommends using it in engines that sit for 90 days or more without activity.

You should use it if your car sits like you said. Only AVGAS (100 low lead) is designed to be able to sit (in aircraft fuel tanks) for long periods (which is good for any vehicle/equipment that has no catalytic converter). Nolead is meant to be burned off in short order, thus no long term storage capabilities.

I work in fuel measurement (@ bulk plants & aviation sites) & sometimes get scrap AVGAS for my bike & other car. Just don't get cought by those "revenuers" for using the blue coloured fuel on the highway (no road tax paid).
