If you can smell gas, its because its definitely leaking somewhere in the system. I'd suggest looking all around the ground after you let your car sit overnight or for a while at work, etc. Look for a small puddle of fluid (gas). Then go from there and narrow down the general area of the problem.
My suggestion is to look around the gas tank itself. If you can't see very much of it, just reach around the seams of the tank with your hand and feel for moisture.
Had a few friends that had the same thing. The tank itself might have rotted out in an area. It might only be a pin hole, but it will leak fuel, and create a loss of fuel pressure. which in turn will tell your car something is wrong and throw a code. Your check engine light is the most generic uh-oh meter in the world. there are thousands of things that can cause it to come on. If you have the capability I'd recommend hooking it up to a scan tool and checking to see what other codes might have been triggered. Never hurts to know what else is going on.
