I recently smell gasoline when I am around my car. I can even smell it when I am inside my car. The smell is stronge when I start my car and turn on heater.

The check engine has been on for about half year and my car sometimes not respond to gas pedal. I have changed oxygen sensor and knock sensor because OBD II showed related error codes, but to no avail. I basically gave up since the car is still drivable until now because the smell is not pleasant. Also mileage has gone down a bit.

Can someone tell me what causes the gasoline smell and what I should to? Thanx

Fuel lines are cracked? That would be my guess.

start from your fuel pump lines and follow it all the way to the fuel rail. look for any cracks or leaking.

the smell might be the cause of a bad fuel pump gasket. thats where the gas smell came from my car.

If you can smell gas, its because its definitely leaking somewhere in the system. I'd suggest looking all around the ground after you let your car sit overnight or for a while at work, etc. Look for a small puddle of fluid (gas). Then go from there and narrow down the general area of the problem.

My suggestion is to look around the gas tank itself. If you can't see very much of it, just reach around the seams of the tank with your hand and feel for moisture.

Had a few friends that had the same thing. The tank itself might have rotted out in an area. It might only be a pin hole, but it will leak fuel, and create a loss of fuel pressure. which in turn will tell your car something is wrong and throw a code. Your check engine light is the most generic uh-oh meter in the world. there are thousands of things that can cause it to come on. If you have the capability I'd recommend hooking it up to a scan tool and checking to see what other codes might have been triggered. Never hurts to know what else is going on.

Any update on this? I have a 95 240 that is doing the same thing. I'd like to know what you found so I know where to start.

Thanks,Mike

Check that your charcoal canister is hooked up. It is there to absorb the vapors from the fuel tank. It may be defective. These vapors will give you the gas smell. Also check the clamps on the fuel filter. If they are too tight they could have cut through the fuel line and caused a leak.

It's not hooked up now. I disconnected it when I replaced the engine. The day I got the car, I noticed the smell as well and the canister was hooked up then.

Check these three places. Your fuel injectors for clogging, busted o-rings(should see yellow build up around that area).. your fuel rail.. and your hatch to check fora fuel line leak... (thats where mine is im not sure about yours) but you should be able to see a drip from your trunk...

give that a try.. if not.. then sorry cant help yah

i had that same problem, smelt like gasoline all day, it turns out one of my fuel lines was punctured and spraying gas all over my exhaust and under my car. i just bought about 6 feet of fuel line for about 50 some dollars and got way better mileage and no more smell. so you might wanna check the fuel lines that run off the fuel pump.
