I just bought an 03 M45 last week. While reading the owners manual I see that it says not to use gas with ethanol. I went to fill it up friday and every freaking gas station has ethanol in the gas. The stations around here have 10% ethanol. Has anyone ran into any problems from this or is it just a bunch of BS in the manual? Just curious.

Mines an '06 and Ive been filling up at the same shell station by my house since I bought the car. The sign that reads, this gas contains 10% ethanol, has been there as long as I can remember. I havent had any issues.

Im not positive, but I'd go as far as to say that all gas around here contains 10% ethanol. I think it might even be state law.

Virtually all gas stations in the USA now sell gas with up to 10% ethynol content. This however doesn't change the fact though that unless you own a "FlexFuel" vehicle ethynol isn't the best thing to put in your tank, but it appears we no longer have a choice. Manufacturers will honor warranties for ethynol related issues as long as the fuel being used contains no more than 10% ethynol. The problem that ethynol creates in most vehicles is that it attracts with and bonds to water molecules, so its basically like running your vehicle with a certain percentage of water in the fuel. Cars that are designed to run on ethynol or a significant ethynol/gasoiline mix incorporate fuel "dryers" into the fuel system to pull out the water. With the almost universal use of ethynol in gasoline today I've always wondered why no one offers these dryers for conventional internal combustion engines???

My boat has a special filter right after the fuel pump that supposedly removes water from the gasoline. Some of these filters actually have a little drain on the bottom you can open to let the water drip out.

Would that do any good?
