It appears that after leaving gas in a tank for 8 years leaves it with water after a few years, and it rusts the tank from the inside. Rusted my fuel pump and sending unit.
I was able to fix the sending unit somehow, clean the gunk well and put a new fuel pump and filter. Car drove for 8 miles from my office parking lot to my house driveway. Parked it for 2 more years, and pump rusted again....
Bought a new pump, car started again, 2 bad injectors. Replaced injectors, but a stron fuel smell is driving me crazy and sending unit is inaccurate. So I ordered a new Bosch gasket and a used sending unit, that comes with a fuel pump. When I opened the tank again, it was full of tar in the bottom and corrosion.
Should I just get a different tank? Found a used one on eBay for $150 .
Is a used one going to have the same corrosion and tar? They give a one year warranty.
I'm thinking about returning the new fuel pump and keeping the used one that came with the sending unit. My new pump cost me $175 the sending unit with the used pump cost me $68 so I can return the new pump and buy the gas tank with that mine... I'm tight for money right now, what else would I drive a 23 year old car? Also I think that the junk in the tank is clogging more injectors (replaced 2)
I do not want to open the planum to replace the additional injectors, now that I found the source of clog gage, perhaps a rail cleaning would do the job?
Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I would check with a local radiator shop that may also offer fuel tank repair and restoration services.

I haven't seen it personally, but I'm sure it'll be more common with the ethanol fuel content we see now. I think a used tank would probably be ok if it hasn't rusted... or google "coating for rusted gas tank" and for $80-100 you can buy the chemicals to clean and recoat the inside yourself. I haven't personally done this before, so I'm not sure which one is best...

Apparently, it's is fairly cheap and simple to clean a gas tank. I need to empty the tank, keep a little fuel in it, put in some gravel. Shake well let the rust break. Empty it. Then put a gallon of vinegar , shake it well. Let it sit , it will eat the rust off as is it's an acid. , repeat the process till the rust is gone.

My other option is to buy a used gas tank for $150 on EBay.

A radiator shop wanted to charge me $95

What a ripoff.

It happens up here in the NE. When temps are consistently dropping below and increasing above freezing you will see frost on the outside of your tank. It actually can build up inside

I'm assuming there was a coating on the inside of the tank to keep it from rusting in the first place (galvanized?) that's gone. The cleaning won't do anything to help prevent it in the future... That's the point of some of the coatings. With ethanol in the fuel, moisture is far more of a problem than it used to be when we could buy real gas.

Steam cleaning is required before any repairs are done.
