Bump cause I have the same problem. My car won't start unless I relieve the pressure in the gas tank (by unscrewing the gas tank nozzle cover thingy). Then when it does start, the car idles funny and there are fumes like no other...

My car has always had pressure behind the cap and I thought this to be normal. It has never effect my start up. From what Ive heard your supposed to have some pressure in the tank.I dont know why your alls would be different. Ill ask around and see if I can help you all.

Although all of us know how to use the fuel filler cap, it is actually more complicated than it looks. Inside the fuel filler cap is a pressure release valve. This allows it to vent the fumes in the gas tank if they build up to predetermined levels. Until the fumes reach these levels, they are shunted through the charcoal canister which collects the fuel from the air before the air escapes. When the fumes build up above the predetermined (differing from car to car) threshold level of the fuel filler cap's pressure release valve, they are vented into the atmosphere. The fuel filler cap has a rubber flange around the neck. This flange should be inspected for cracks or inflexibility. If the flange does become cracked or inflexible, it should be replaced to keep the environment clean.

i hear the pressure when i'm getting gas, and the car is still running (turbo timer counting down). And if people were concerned about clean air, they wouldn't have gotten Sr20det's which arent smog legal anwayays.

biggie here is not to cap that line for the carbon canister that runs to the fuel tank and to make sure the gas cap's workin. Otherwise you can get vapor lock.
