I drive a 90 240sx.

When I remove the plastic cap to fill in gas, I normally hear air gushing out of the tank. I always thought this was normal.

My friend had the same problem in his camry and the mechanic told him that it was coz there was a hole in the gas tank.

Is this true, coz of late, I have been getting only 18 miles to the gallon, which isnt bad for an automatic and for the way I drive the car.

Please let me konw as to what u guys think.

No air coming out is good. Don't listen to them they just trying to get you. If your hotrodding it all the time there is more extra gass that goes back through the return into the gas tank and air gets compressed in there cause it has no where to go. until you let it out by removing the cap. So that means there is no leaks anywhere. You know you have a gas leak when you smell gas or when your car blows up in a blaze of glory. Whichever comes first.

Did you ever read the text printed on (most) gas caps? Something like "warning: contents may be under pressure".

Don't worry about your car blowing up like something from the A-Team. :D

Thanks Guys, that was really assuring. I like the whichever comes first part ;-)

But I still have another question, my friends camry does the same thing (the whoosh noise), but when we fill the gas tank we can acctually smell gas. How do you guys explain that.... or are we just missing somethin here.

gas fumes spread through the air, that's how you smell them.
