I am going to be converting the spare tire compartment into a gas tank. Thought it would be a good way to lose a few extra pounds in my car! ^.^ just wanted to know what people though. I wanna do it though..

cause i say if your gonna do it do it right, weld a new piece of metal over the indention for the spare tire then mount the fuel cell on top of that

yea what he said. why do you want to do this anyway? other than losing weight... which would be minimal at best

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to accomplish here, are you trying to use the existing spare tire well and part of your tank? if so that is a really stupid idea.

If you are planning on running a fuel cell than that isn't so stupid. But keep in mind that you should look into a way to protect yourself incase of a fire. That is why the tank is under the car, the fire has to get through the metal first.

If you don't know what you're doing, don't do it and leave it to professionals.

If you access to all the material and able to do it yourself or very cheaply in cost and already have a fuel cell in hand...then sure why not. But if your going to pay for everything then hell no you can spend your money else to increase power rather than reduce weight.

But its your car...

besides the safety issue magikdragon brought up, you'd be negatively effecting the center of gravity by putting the sole weight of the fuel cell at a higher location

see this is why i brought it up. I saw someone do it before a while back... I do have all the materials.. so i though i'd see what people thought.. So i'm just trying to get opinions on it...

It's not gonna save much, and in my case wont let you get lower.

^ What's the extra space in your battery box for? Nice setup though. That's how it should be done.

space would be for a bigger battery, you can see a little hold down in there. Since then I have stripped and cleaned the trunk out. the gas tank was ripped open when I got the car, so this was a better option in my case. It also work well with my set up. I just need to take better pics of back there.

I am gonna get rid of the battery box though and go with this.

Oh and in reply to WhiteComet, The fuel tank with the cell doesn't sit much higher, it really depends on the size, but it ends up coming down a bit.. So the fuel weight is raised up a little higher in the car, but now its centered, before it was offset to the right. It also puts it in a more vertical space reducing the liquid balance.
