Check all the clamps on the fuel hoses and make sure they're tight. Some may be hard to get to... not sure on I30.

Good idea to replace the fuel filter if you haven't done so in the last year. Perhaps it's getting clogged up?

Does the car run OK? If it runs rough, could be other things too like airflow sensor.

Hopefully it will be one of these and not fuel injector leaks. I had the injector leaks in my old Maxima (these were recalled by Nissan) and the smell came through the vents. Is that where you are smelling it from?

NAW IM NOT SMELLING IT THROUGH THE VENTS, BUT YOU CAN REALLY SMELL IT BAD WHEN THE CARS COLD AND YOU START IT AND STAND NEXT TO IT. DO YOU THINK THIS COULD BE THE INJECTORS? IF SO LET ME KNOW SO I CAN FIX IT OR TAKE IT TO GET FIXED IF ITS A BIG JOB. THANKS.

Car: should be obvious enough

could be deteriorated fuel hoses, bad connections, a bad fuel damper, or a bad fuel pressure regulator. I had a 94 J30 with that gasoline smell at startup and that turned out to be the culprit.

I think that is probably right, the fuel lines should be checked out first, I had to replace those on my maxima too...hope to god it isn't the fuel injectors! Check out the fuel lines first.

Did you ever solve the problem? I have the same problem on my 97 J30 (50,000) miles on it at startup. But the gas fume smell quickly goes away once the engine warms up (a few minutes later). Just wanted to see how much the cost would be to solve this problem. Take care.
