mac ,If you got that fuel tank in the trunk , and the f/pump seal (gasket) is probably allowing fumes to come into trunk - all these cars seem to , if you noticed , build pressure in tank after just a few min. driving.Ya know that woooshing sound upon removal of gas-cap

So what's probably happening (most vehicles designed w/slight airflow from cabin to trunk then to the outside to "clear" any CO accumulation) , so your smelling fumes AFTER tank press. builds , then IF Climatrol is on - increased cabin "AIR' causes fumes to "Blow-Back" into trunk then to the outside thus lessening the smell , as you describe ??
Hey one important thing - fuel pressure being off by 3-4 lbs is really not that big a deal. As long as it DOES go from "low" @ idle to a (near spec) higher @ WOT .I believe your seeing & describing an insignificant "Variation" ,in my opinion of an auto part . Hey at WOT don't you want an extra 7% , no harm ?
