I have a strong gas smell in my cabin that gets so bad that the car is not tolerable to drive without the windows down.

I have changed the fuel lines and clamps for the return and sending lines on the fuel pump
checked the fuel lines under the hood and tightened all the clamps
and checked the hard lines going from the fuel pump to the engine.

The fuel pressure seems slightly high compared to what im aware of so im going to change the FPR
readings were 36psi at idle and 48 at WOT and i think the manual calls for 33 idle and 43 WOT.

The car has an egr delete and the AIC delete, that was not done by me. Im going to check to see if it has the carbon canister delete today as well.

The weird part about it all is that the gas smell will be very strong with the climate control OFF but the second I hit the "Auto" button on the climate control or the Front windshield Defrost button, the smell seems to vanish?? either that or i'm so high off of gas fumes that i'm imagining that it goes away lol. Usually people have this problem in reverse where the smell comes with the heat on and goes away with it off but my problem is the reverse.

any ideas?? please help, this car was a project that I picked up and never got around to working on but suddenly became my daily driver after i just got into an accident with my previous daily. I need to get it tolerable to drive. Any input will be appreciated!

mac ,If you got that fuel tank in the trunk , and the f/pump seal (gasket) is probably allowing fumes to come into trunk - all these cars seem to , if you noticed , build pressure in tank after just a few min. driving.Ya know that woooshing sound upon removal of gas-cap :yesnod . So what's probably happening (most vehicles designed w/slight airflow from cabin to trunk then to the outside to "clear" any CO accumulation) , so your smelling fumes AFTER tank press. builds , then IF Climatrol is on - increased cabin "AIR' causes fumes to "Blow-Back" into trunk then to the outside thus lessening the smell , as you describe ??
Hey one important thing - fuel pressure being off by 3-4 lbs is really not that big a deal. As long as it DOES go from "low" @ idle to a (near spec) higher @ WOT .I believe your seeing & describing an insignificant "Variation" ,in my opinion of an auto part . Hey at WOT don't you want an extra 7% , no harm ? :chuckle:

The variation in FP can be easily in the tool used.

Any evap codes? Evap line cracked at rubber can do that.................smoke test. You'll have at least one evap purge line coming from back of car to a purge valve somewhere under hood and leaks in that line can do it. If the carbon canister is gone then look at the lines to it and is one open to atmosphere? Some few cars can do it if owner insists on overfilling the tank to flood the carbon canister and then you can get smell from that.

Take note of the a/c mode, if on max air or recirculation it takes the same air in the cockpit and recycles it and not on max air means it takes outside air into the car off the base of windshield. The difference there can tell you if the leak is forward of firewall because pulling air off base of windshield is often where you get the smell, the heater thing. Yours opposite that may mean leak under the car seeping in and the a/c purges it out.

hey, found time to work on it last night. it was the fuel pump o ring! the previous guy working on it apparently didnt change it and had it all crimped up. it was only sealing half of the pump and totally off of the other side!! :rotflmao

on another note, you are correct, the air blowing from the vents were just pushing it to the back of the car. i had my room mate come and sit in the car and told me that he still smelled it and that im just retarded high from sitting in fumes all day.but later on i found that my exhaust had a leak directly underneath the seats where the cats meet the xpipe so i was sitting in exhaust fumes AND open gas vapors......man i have a head ache.....

all good now though, smells fresh and clean and went on a nice cruise today! thanks guys!
