gas smell...

I don't know what exactly it is, but whenever I give the peddle more pushin' than needed for the usual daily drivin I get a strong gas smell. in other words, when I'm driving the car a bit harder than normal I get it.

could it be getting more gas than it's able to burn? if so how do I fix that? or maybe the spark isn't strong enough to ignite all the fuel it's getting?
