Hi Everyone,My 91 Q smells like gas after I drive it, no matter how long or fast. I don't think that it is leaking anywhere. My uncle said it looked like it's coming from some canister near the front of the hood. I'm trying to not drive it much bacuse I don't want anything bad to happen. Any help would be appricaiated..Thanks

P.S. I hope you all had a good Christmas!

change the hoses that connect to the fuel rail. its a common problem. if thats not it they should be changed anyway.

Inside the engine compartment in front of the passenger seat, at the back of the "spider thing" ....tighten the clamps, it's a B**** but better than smelling that.

No a new airfreshener wont help !

Get a flashlight and look below the spider manifold into the valley between the cylinder banks at the very back. You should spot a puddle of gas. If so, it's that hose the others are talking about - about 4 inches long, connecting to a hard line. You can usually get at the clamp with a ratchet with phillips head.

But your hoses are shot. It's gonna need a full under plenum hose replacement soon. Read this thread:

Check the trunk also and see if you smell it coming from there. It could be the fuel pump o-ring.

Hey Evan, No, The smell is definately from under the hood. I looked but didn't see any puddles, and don't feel to good about driving it right now.

Delta,

Could also be a failing injector. I've noticed that raw fuel smell just prior to an injector crapping out. You may want to see if you can pinpoint the smell to a specific area on start-up. You can also ohm the injectors through the harness to see if they are within specs. Other leak prone areas are the connections to the fuel filter and all fuel rail/rubber fuel line connections. But the area the others mentioned is probably the most common trouble spot.

That always did the trick for me, at least for six months or so. One stubby screwdriver and a couple minutes of time and I was good to go.

Yea thanks everyone. Maybe I'll go and snoop around in there some more. It could easily be an injector. I know my Q is pretty neglected right now ...

Hey guys, I took the Q in and it was just a hose that needed to be replaced. I'm really happy that it was something fairly cheap to fix. Now I can drive my Q again! yea!

It was 142 to replace the hose which is for an hour and a half of labor at $95.00 and hour.

I also have the under hood gas smell. Can't drive the car anymore do to the odor. I have now removed the Plenum (broke a couple of hoses) and will be replacing hoses as necessary. I don't see any gas leaking but the smell is very strong from where the throttle body connected to the Plenum. My real question is what can I use to clean the black gook out of the inside of the Plenum? I tried mineral spirits and the green stuff at the car wash but not much luck. I'm concerned that the EGR is blocked with all that black junk. Here are some pictures.
