gas smell in the car

well i was driving one day and realized that it started to smell like gas. it wasnt even a slight breeze or anything. you can actually smell a strong gas smell inside my car while i was driving. i dont know what to check or anything. really new at this. so does anyone know wat i should check? my friend says that the cover of the fuel pump is leaking.

please help!

positronone did the write up on Walbro fuel pump installation and you should check that thread. Lift trunk carpet and you will see round cover with wires. Remove that and fuel pump is right there. You can see fuel lines too, so check all that. It's on the passenger side BTW. Keep us posted.

the cover on the fuel pump may be leaking. There is a big o-ring that fits in a groove on the cover. The rubber probably absorbs gas over 15 years or so and expands. It ends up too big and doesnt fit properly. I had a bad gas smell in my hatch after I put my walbro in. I took the cover off, about 1/4" out of the oring and stuck it back together with a drop of liquid gasket. Solved it.

I replaced o-ring when I installed Walbro pump on mine. It was like $10 or so from the dealership. I lubed it and installed. Also, I used smell some gas when I worked on rear wheel especially passenger side, but it went away right after I got new o-ring.
