I have a 1991 240sx hb and when I go up and down on hills every time I smell gas in the car I have heard it could be my fuel pump or my fuel pump gasket. When I take my gas cap off I don't here it depressurize.

Also sometimes if im taking a sharp turn or getting on to an on ramp for a freeway if I step on it while my gas is low my car will go up to like 4 to 4.5k and then fall flat on its face like its completely out of gas but I know there is at least 2 gallons or more left in the tank. If anyone has any info please feel free to share thank you.

possibilities: 1) running rich with an exhaust leak
2)that fuel pump gasket worn out.

maybe more possibilties, but check those 2 :)GL

Welcome to 240sx.

Fuel pump gasket is my guess, especially since when you take the gas cap off you can't hear is depressurize.

Thank you to everyone who replied I will be replacing my fuel pump gasket this weekend and will post the results if it works or not and also could the gasket being bad give me any type of bad gas mileage or could it damage the fuel pump in any way?

It won't hurt the fuel pump, and it won't hurt the actual fuel mileage that your car is getting, but it will appear like you are getting crap fuel mileage because you will be getting less miles out of a tank of gas, as it is evaporating and stinking up your car instead of being burned by the engine.

If your fpr is in good working order, you shouldn't have a problem.

I had this happen in my Zenki. Turned out it was a rubber hose connected to the top of the gas tank. Hose came off, fumes came out. And some gas when it was full. Check that out, it was an easy fix if so.
