Oh and they will throw a code so tell you there's something wrong... telltale sign on OBDI cars is the CEL coming on and going off randomly. That usually means on o2 sensor is on its way out.

I think it does that for many of the codes. I know it does it for the EGR code. And if the light comes on and goes back off, you should have a stored code in the ecu that you can pull.

Greteings J30 fellows;

I too have yet too have my low fuel light come on. I just filled her up at 1 click above "E" and it took 14 gallons. Yoda- I like your idea, but seems gutsy- LOL! I guess I'll buy a 1 gl can and try it. :chuckle:

and having a functional egr is one thing that will greatly effect mileage. also any vaccum leaks will effect fuel mileage. i had to do my cam seals and once i did those fuel mileage went up along with other hoses that were drying out. also having rusted out exhaust will effect that (personal experience for me) i went from about 13 mpg city avg. and right under 200 miles to the tank in city to about almost 18 mpg city and depending on how i drive it almost 250 to 260 miles to the tank. 16-17 gallons when i go from empty to full. i have never had my light come on and i have put in once 17.5 gallons in.

FYI I did finally get the low fuel light.
Stuck in a MASSIVE traffic jam.
It came on when the needle went a tad under the "E"
Bailed off the freeway and filled her up.
I was happy to see it and a nervous wreck getting to the gas station all at the same time !! LOL

I will have to ask our crew chief how much gas we were putting in at pit stops but the gauge would read empty or one line above with no sputtering under race conditions ,the lack of sputtering indicates there was plenty of fuel available while on E

So how many gallons did it take to fill 'er up? I have to work to get the needle to go to or past Full when filling up, and it quickly drops to 3/4 of a tank after 35 to 50+ miles of driving, depending on whether it's stop and go or freeway miles. The needle stays near 1/2 tank for the longest time.

I understand that some gasolines are worse than others when it comes to leaving sulfur deposits on gas gauge tank components and have always believe that Nissan designed the gauge to work with a fuel tank whose dimensions are perfectly rectangular (the J30 tank holds less volume per inch nearer the top).

Gerry;

My 96 acts like yours. To get it to the F takes patience and determination and after about 50 miles, starts dropping rapidly. I've always been one to keep a minimum 1/2 tank in my cars. Each time I get to E or a click above, it takes 14 gallons. This tells me that there'a at least 5 to go (or there abouts) on E. I've never had my light come on, suspecting a burnt bulb. But after seeing what Yoda wrote, I will assume it's ok and only try it one day when I get gutsy enough and have a spare 2 gallon can in the trunk. The tank I know is not square, nor round, but somewhere in between.

Filled up this am with the needle almost on E, taking 13.2 gal (285 miles of combined highway/city driving) and getting the needle not quite all the way to F.
