Here is an interesting site. You can graph gas prices for up to three metropolitan areas, for periods ranging from 1 to 72 months.

I chose San Diego, Boston and New Jersey as three examples, and I am amazed at the difference in pricing. San Diego looks like a roller coaster, while New Jersey looks like a Kansas highway on the graph. None of this makes sense, since much of the Alaskan oil is shipped into SoCal and refined here, then shipped throughout the country. Yet, we pay more for the same gas they sell cheaper elsewhere. Now they are telling us that we’ll be paying $4.00/gallon by spring. That’s $80.00 to fill up the G.

I see that gas in my part of the country is running from a low of $3.30+/- for regular, to high of $3.79+/- for premium, averaging about $3.47.

New Jersey happens to have the 3rd lowest state tax on gasoline at 14.3c per gallon. This may not remain for long as NJ is broke and has a deficit of 33 billion dollars. Our present govenor Corzine is talking about raising the gas tax as well as tolls to reduce the deficit. We also have extremely high property taxes. The United States has had a misguided energy policy for quite some time. What would one expect from an incompetent oil man in the white house? My gas usage last month was $296.00. We'll probably see $4.00 a gallon here by spring and it wouldn't surprise me if California reaches $5.00 per gallon in the near future. Many vehicles in europe are smaller diesel manual transmissions & I believe we'll see more of the same here also.

We have a major pipeline about 20 miles from me. It originates in the gulf of Mexico and goes north from there. Our prices have fluctuated lately by $0.15-$0.25 from city to city but we do remain below the national average. I think the price also has a lot to do with state tax levels being different.
