I own a 2002 sentra gxe, 1.8. While i am driving my car, and i go to push on the gas pedal it gets stuck and will not allow me to accelerate smoothly. The only way that I can acclerate is if I push on the pedal real hard. Does anybody know what the problem might be?

Is it the pedal itself or the throttle? Does it keep accelerating, but the pedal comes back?

If it's the pedal, this may sound dumb, but check your floormats to see if they're grabbing the pedal somehow.

If it's the throttle cable, then check the cables on the top of the intake manifold. One of the nuts or rubber stoppers may be loose.

Lastly, the TPS may be bad.

My gas pedal used to get stuck to the floor. It only happened when I had the winter floor mats in and if they slid forward, causing the pedal to get stuck..

It is the pedal it self, and it does not continue to accelerate.

Any check engine light?

Have the throttle position sensor checked out (or test the voltage yourself, you can look up the specs by downloading the FSM from the link in my signature).

Try pulling the air intake off the throttle body and clean around the valve. Some times the air filter oil builds up over time and gunks up the valve. Clean it out with some solvent and see if that fixes it.

I am having this problem too. Which answer worked for you? It feels mechanical. Like something is worn and it sticks on the edge of something. Once I trounce on it it works ok but any time I take my foot off the pedal it is anyone's guess if it will do it the next time. I can go days without it acting up and then I can go days when it acts up every time.

PS, it is not the floor mats, that is the first thing I looked at.
