Gosh. If that were true, junk yards in Japan would be full of cars whose engines are either not broken in or barely so. Time to go engine huntin'!

First tank with the CVT netted us 35+ mpg, mostly highway. We'll see where it goes from here.I should mention avg speed was in the 50s or 60s - it was a state highway so one of those roads where sometimes speed limit is 70 and sometimes it's 25 because you're going through a dinky little town. Top speed was 84, passing.

Much has been written in these forums about the superior fuel economy of the 6 speed manual versus the CVT. While I would agree that this is probably true IN THE CITY, I think my highway numbers would argue otherwise. A 6 speed Versa revs about 3,100 @ 65 mph versus 2,200 rpms for a CVT equipped model. Those higher highway revs take additional energy (not to mention the increased noise levels). Also, the pistons in a CVT equipped Versa are travelling 1/3 less per mile which should equate to longer engine life.
I also agree that the CVT does better on the freeway when cruising over 60mph, in most conditions. As for engine life, I don't nessesarily agree. Yes it's running almost 50% higher RPM's, but it's producing almost 33% less torque at that RPM. It's arguable more wear on piston rings, but less stress on the bearings, connecting rods and transmission.

Sometimes I wish it had taller 6th gear or final drive, but then when I'm on some tight European style backroads, it all makes sense.

I just did a trip this weekend with my v form Virginia to Ohio and back but 1050 miles on my V and fill up at 1/4 tank left, and got 33.4 mpg the whole trip including 50 miles of 3krpms+ mountain driving.

I do have one question for you guys and that is at 1/4 tank left it takes 8 gallons to fill up, so does the gas gauge go below E before the light comes on for low fuel or should I take my new V into the dealer and have them reset the gas gauge?

I should have 5 gallons left if I only but 8 gallons in the tank right?

P.S just bought my V 2 weeks ago and she has only 1250 miles on her and getting 32.5mpg average.

^^^ Well, it's a 13.2 gallon tank, but "empty" corresponds to about 2 or 3 gallons remaining. Technically, a quarter-tank left should be a little over 3 gallons, but counting the "reserve" amount for safety, probably more like 5 or so gallons remain.

8 seems like quite a bit to put in when it reads 1/4 tank left, but as has been discussed, gas gauges are inherently inaccurate. Also, if you notice, the needle will remain stationary for some time - sort of like when you see it point to a half-tank for several miles. Obviously, it's moving very slowly, but it can be deceiving to think you've got a half-tank left when in actuality the needle has just slipped below the mark.

In our V, the gas-warning light comes on when the needle hits "E" - and in those cases we've put in just over 10 gallons.

I'm not privy to any gas gauge "reset" administered by the dealer, however.

My first tank netted about 19 miles per gallon but not sure how accurate that is. The dealer filled me up and I'm not 100% sure how much gas they put in the car. I now it was reading full but you never know if they topped off or not (I assume not). I'm still working on my second tank and will be curious to see exactly what I end up with this time around.

I'm hoping to end up with close if not better than my '98 sunfire which averages around 28 mpg.

I drove cross country last week and averaged just above 32/mpg with an average speed of 72 with the 6 speed. The mileage sure dropped off as I tried to go 80 or above for any amount of time.

Hi!I'm having this car since feb 07 and at the beginning I was getting about 25-28 mpg in the mix cycle city hway(225 mile for full tank), but now I have 6400 miles and I only getting 185 mile for full tank about 11 gallons. I was trying to switch fro regular gasolin to silver grade --- same thing.Who can tell me if I can use super, silver or regular gas. Car dealer told me that I can use regular.Thanks.

I was checking out a new commercial from Nissan and I noticed they lowered the MPG on the Versa from 36 to 33 with the CVT.
