My 96 240sx's gas gauge always says empty and it hasn't bothered me till now with my new job. If anybody knows a common reason why it just says E can you help me out? I've heard it could be the float.

I would say that the needle on the sending unit isn't touching anymore. Its possible that thr float sunk but the material is made out of I find it unlikely.

You can bend the needle so it makes contact again. The sending unit is in the gas tank. To fix this and confirm its fixed, pull the fuel pump fuse, pull the sending unit turn the key on and move the float up and, down and if the needle makes contact through the entire range it should make you're gas gauge should move accordingly. Google ”how to fix fuel sending unit” and there are some how to videos that should be helpful.

No, remove the spare tire cover, you'll see it.

In you're case it sounds like the rod to the float got bent, giving a incorrect reading. That happened to me on my fwd 200sx.
