Has anyone come back to the car and found the gas lid open...no indication of tampering? This has happened to me a few times. I dont think ive noticed a drop in gas levels like someone got me, so im wondering if it's happened to anyone else. I can count maybe seven times this year.

This has happened to me twice - funny thing is I also had 2 episodes of the fuel tank problem (trying to fill it and the pump keeps wanting to shut off like it usually should when it's totally topped off - so had to pull out/put it back in/pull out/slightly put it in and start the flow slow, gradually increasing)

Last time I filled up - NO problem....

This has happened to me at least 4 times in the past 6-9 months, no signs of tampering.

The door is held closed by a magnet at the end of the little black gizmo with the rubber tubing on it. Maybe your magnet is wearing out or the gizmo is not clicking into the locked position completely? Seems unlikely, but that is all my head came up with when I scratched it for this question.

mine is doing the same thing... it no longer will open with the spring open mechanism. so I have to push on the back of the fuel door to manually open it...

Mine is broken "three". I bet at least 20% of all pre 2008 M's fuel door is broken. Mine has been broken since 2008. Somebody should poll it.

I've noticed that the gas door pops open when I close the filler door after the doors relock sometimes. Here's the typical scenario for me.

1. I get out of the car to go into the gas station and I lock my doors as I leave the car.

2. I get something to drink and pay for some gas with cash and I come back to the car.

3. I unlock the doors because the gas door has a lock and you cannot open it when the doors are locked.

4. I fill up with gas but as I do so, the doors relock themselves since I did not open any doors after unlocking the car.

5. I push the gas door closed after filling up, but since the doors were locked, the door actually closes but does not actually stay properly secured.

6. I unlock the doors to get back into the car but when I do, that is the moment the gas door pops open again, because the gas door wasn't properly latched shut to the mechanism since the gas door lock slid back to the lock position.

I've fiddled around with it by bending the gas door latch with my fingers and it's been probably six months or more since I've seen it open.

One way to make sure it doesn't pop open on you is to just unlock the doors before you close the fuel filler door. Or stay looking at your gas door when you unlock the doors again to make sure it doesn't pop back open before you get back into the car. The car is sneaky with the door on the right side, you won't notice it pop open if you unlock the doors standing next to the drivers door.

Nobody can blame you for not being detailed when explaining a problem lol. Your scenario doesn't apply to me. My sequence is, unlock doors, get out, press gas lid, fill up, close lid, get back in. I have only seen the issue happen once since this posting about this. Also, this has happened without a visit to the gas station...."ghost in the machine".
