I have a 2008 M35 with the gas fill door that should be locked when the car is locked. It was working fine, but for the last 3 weeks or so it seems like it may be a little "loose"? When I lock the doors to my car the gas fill door pops out a little further - leaving a gap of about 1/4 inch, and of course not being locked. What I figure is happening is the actuator goes to lock it but because the lid may be just a hair offset from what it should be the actuator pushes it open more. When I unlock the doors the gas fill door goes back to a more normal position.

When the doors are locked and the gas fill door is pushed out I can go push it in and then it is locked fine. What I'm thinking is I just need to make a slight adjustment so the door rests more closed than it currently is when the doors are unlocked. Then when the actuator goes to lock it won't push it out, but I can't figure out if there is a simple way to adjust this. Has anyone had any experience like this?

Take a look at the door itself. Does it appear like the actuator latch moved inward a bit? It's easy to bang these things with the gas pump filler and think nothing of it.

I figured it out, and I hate to admit to it - because it will make me look like an idiot, but I will in case anyone else has this issue in the future. To my credit living in Wisconsin it was pretty cold so I didn't spend much time out trying to figure this out, I figured I would wait until it got warmer. I did spend a few minutes in the garage and noticed that the connecting wire that prevents the gas cap from falling to the ground got re-routed in by the hinge. This was just enough to not allow it to close all the way.
