so my mechanic swears if u put higher octane fuel in ur car its better all around. i did put premium in my 95 explorer and it helped the hesitation it had so i just bought my 07 altima and ive been putting 91-93 fuel in it. is that bad? am i gonna screw anything up cuz it burns hotter? lastly are there a few small things i can do to add a little horsepower to the car? k&n? this is my 1st foreign car and i wanna keep it as perfect as i can. any suggestions?

Yes, higher octane fuel is better for the engine all together

So us 2.5ers can put 91 (premium) in our coupes and it'd be ok/better? What about 93?

your car are usually tuned for a certain octane rating of gas, look into your user's manual to find the optimal range. Higher octane such as 93 are not availble in many places, such as CA. I would say for most cars with a dohc engine nowadays have a rating of 91 octane.

Don't run what your engine isn't tuned for. Making the car to compensate is going to rob you either of MPG or performance, if not both.

higer octane is to help stablilze the burn of higher compression motors by preventing premature detination of the power stroke . That is why a high compression motor will knock and or run on ( motor running after being turned off ) with a lower octane - the heat created by compression will ignite the fuel before the spark is timed to ( I think/hope this was the way it was explained to me ). So my opinion is read the owners manual and use recommended octane as any higher will not benifit , and if you use lower then recommended it will not hurt your engine as long as you don't hear any knocking or run on. My A/C coupe and my 04 Maxima was recommended to use 91 or better and all I ever run in them is 89 . The preformance or fuel economy lose is so minute it doesn't offset the cost !!!

The term "knock" refers to a condition of the engine, not a sound you hear from it

Heres an easy fact for ya 07AltimaGirl. 95% of production cars, in America, are built to run on 87-93 octane fuel. They can run on any of them. You will notice more performance with higher grade/octane fuels. Simple, quick, and to the point
