That is why a high compression motor will knock and or run on ( motor running after being turned off ) with a lower octane - the heat created by compression will ignite the fuel before the spark is timed to ( I think/hope this was the way it was explained to me ). So my opinion is read the owners manual and use recommended octane as any higher will not benifit , and if you use lower then recommended it will not hurt your engine as long as you don't hear any knocking or run on. My A/C coupe and my 04 Maxima was recommended to use 91 or better and all I ever run in them is 89 . The preformance or fuel economy lose is so minute it doesn't offset the cost !!!
The term "knock" refers to a condition of the engine, not a sound you hear from it
Heres an easy fact for ya 07AltimaGirl. 95% of production cars, in America, are built to run on 87-93 octane fuel. They can run on any of them. You will notice more performance with higher grade/octane fuels. Simple, quick, and to the point
