i have a 91 240 that i want to put an sr20 in.

i have a friend from school who is selling his used garrett dual ball bearing hybrid. (.42 comp/ .48 impeller). it is both water and oil cooled. he is asking for 350. is this a good deal? its in decent shape but may need a rebuild, which he says costs $70 including labor.

would this be suitable for an sr20?

also, i dont know much about turbos, but i was wondering how i can identify that its truly a gt dual ball bearing turbo? is there anything obvious i can look at without ripping the housing apart to tell for sure its what he says it is?

If the compressor housing has .42 A/R on it, and has .48 A/R on the exhaust housing then the turbo is a little too small for an SR engine.

Then again this is assuming it's a T25 family housing. If it's a T3 or T4 family housing then they could be used, but you will produce a good amount of backpressure on the top end.

Check the center housing of the turbocharger for a small metal plate. It should have the turbocharger series (Ex. GT3582R). If there is no "R" following the series then the turbo is not ball bearing, or it was an OEM market turbo whichcase it might not have that marking.

There is a picture of the plate, it's above the banjo fitting in the center of the shaft housing.

You could always get a picture of the turbo.

How would I know, you still haven't posted any other specs. For all I know you just bought a Chevy Sprint OEM turbo that was blown for $120.

Post every number you can find on the turbo, as it appears on the turbo.

Yeah, ball bearing turbos cost $70 to rebuild, and my car runs on cotton candy when I put it in flight mode. Just an ebay rebuild kit for your ultra common journal bearing Garrett T25 is like $80.

and i am pretty sure you just can't rebuild a BB housing, you have to buy a new one... thats the advantage of journal bearings...

Supposedly it can be done, only its really expensive and wont be as reliable. So yeah, your basically stuck with buying a new ball bearing center section which is the most expensive part of the turbo.

"Check the center housing of the turbocharger for a small metal plate" Like Nismo Freak said before you even guess what it wil cost to rebuild.
