Referred me to the amount of smoke that comes out of the muffler.

Well, i never noticed this before but when i went and revved her a few times in the driveway there was indeed a bit more than normal amount of smoke.

How can I fix this, I swear it wasn't doing this before.

Any help is appreciated, I couldn't find anything in the search.

Thanks,

lbrowne

What color is the smoke? If you undo the cap on the motor when it is running does air blow out?

Excessive blow-by can only be fixed by replacing the rings, and sometimes requires boring out the heads if they're out of spec. Yeah, pull the oil cap. If it's not too bad, probably better to let it slide. You can get a better idea of how bad it is by doing a leak-down test.

see, i never thought she was this bad. unless they ahd inadvertantly did something when they had her.

which i doubt.

so start her up, and put my hand over the oil cap opening and see if air is rushing out?

Yeah, or hold a piece of paper over the opening. Same with the exhaust pipe to detect bad exhaust valves.

ooooo yeah she blowin air out that opening alright.

is there a temporary fix for this? what happens if i leave it? Is there an additive i can use jsut for now?

Is it something the shop could have done when they replaced a couple of drive gears for the oil pump that coulda caused it?

1)Do a leakdown test or a compression test, record the values.

2) Drip a small amount of oil into the cylinder (nomally in through the spark pul hole), turn it over a few times.

3) Redo compression test, if the numbers are closer to spec you have worn rings chances are.

4) Depending on the future of your engine, will decide what you do after this point.

Yeah do a compresion test first but I also heard that a bad PCV Valve could make that happen as well. I may be wrong though.

If you really want you could run a heavier weight engine oil too, if you're lucky and the rings aren't too bad (which they don't sound to be with such little smoke) it will be too heavy to seep past the rings and that will be a very temporary fix.

Does anyone know about the Lucas additive that's supposed to help with this? Personally I don't use any oil additives whatsoever, but this case might be an exception.

well i'm still wondering what happens if i leave it. she doesn't blow smoke really bad, sometimes its worse jsut when i start her.

she really doesn't seem close to falling apart... still pulls strong.

My girlfriends car has/had the same issue. It would do it when it was cold, typical worn rings. I moved to a high milage oil and now I'm running 20-50. It solved the problem for the most part, just a tiny puff at start up. Let it warm up a little longer if you switch to heavier oil. You could run a straight single weight oil too, depending on your preference and climate.

I've used Restore engine additive in another vehicle. I'm not a big fan of adding things to oil but it seemed to work well in my old car as a temporary fix(instead of rebuilding the engine).

If you don't have emissions and there is no knocking then nothing important will happen. The only thing you will encounter is fouling plugs as it gets worse and of course using oil.
