Can you drop the motor without removing the headliner and sunroof assembly? My rails & cables appear to be in good shape but every once in a while it's "lazy" closing. I figure I just need to preload the clutch a tiny bit.

The Q's and J30's sunroof assemblies are pretty similiar.

If you go here:http://fuzzycats.com/j30_diy.htm

and take a look at the sunroof repair pdf, it gives you step-by-step instructions on how to fix it.

There is a previous thread, but I do not recall by whom.

First, I would clean and lubricate the rails with lithium grease applied very thoroughly but lightly.

Already cleaned and lubed them very, very well. Everything's working properly according to the shop manual, it's just that every once in a while the motor can't quite pull the cables.

I've seen the fuzzycats site instructions, too. I was just hoping I could drop the motor after removing the front headliner section.

The other post does mention fixing this, but doesn't say whether the motor is accessible without pulling the entire assembly.

Heath has a very informative thread on this. Removing the trim is fairly simple.

Thanks. I'll give the rails another good cleaning to make absolutely sure & then drop the motor. I'd hate to break a cable over it.

Glad Daedalus found my old thread! I used a thin 2" putty knife to push the retaining clip in on the right side of the trim that surrounds the sunroof switch. Other than that you just need to remove the a-pilar covers and sun visors to access that area assuming I remember correctly.

Turns out that another cleaning to remove the old grease and a new shot of lithium took care of it for now... We'll see if it comes back.
