This morning I got the "Stop Light Inoperative" message when I started the car. My brake lights all work. I replaced the 3rd brake light bulbs (high-mounted stop light bulbs) with new oem ones roughly 2 weeks ago. I checked the other bulbs in the tail lights and they are all oem.

The difference this time with the "Stop Light Inoperative" message is that I heard a clicking sound by the ashtray each and everytime I pressed the brake pedal. After maybe 10 times, it stopped doing it and 2 minutes later when I backed out the display went to "OK". The "Stop Light Inoperative" messaget came back on again just as I got home. So this problem is an intermittent one too.

Anyone ever had this problem or know what's going on?

Check your brake light switch [pedal] and the lamp sockets and the light monitoring module for corrosion, melts or solder defects.

The clicking of the brake relay is normal as that unlocks the shift lockout.

I have not seen any visual signs of corrosion on my car anywhere. The fact that my car has lived the last 15 years in Florida, it was spared the harsh winter environment of Canada and all the diasters that plague cars in the Canadian environment. I haven't looked at the areas you mentioned yet; the car's not here now. I'll take a look as soon as I get the chance.

Where is the lamp monitoring module?

I have a new stop lamp switch that I might as well just change since it's been sitting around on a shelf for no reason. Might not help, but probably won't hurt either.

I had a brake switch fail once... The early warning sign was a popping noise in the radio when I pressed the brakes. Not a really common failure item, but worth swapping to eliminate the possibility.
