Hello,

This evening when I went to take the Q out to a meeting it kept stalling in reverse trying to get out of the drive way (if you are wondering about the weather probably 20 degrees C cool evening etc) the driveway is on a slight slope nothing major at all trying to reverse down the car kept stalling.

I had NO A/C on, no stereo, just the headlights (no fog lights or high beam)

Car has half a tank of 98 octane petrol and was driven to and from work today PERFECTLY!

When I reached the road I put the car in drive and it engaged fine on mild acceleration there was a whirring/whining noise coming from what sounded like back of engine/gearbox. This noise occurred between 1200-1800rpm I drove it like this for maximum 100metres...

Ideas?

Fuel filter has been changed less than 2000kms agoSpark plugs changed with NGK platinums 20 000kms agoAir filter has been changed 2000kms ago (genuine nissan)AFM has been cleaned 2000kms ago

Thanks

Did you check transmission fluid level and condition? How long ago was fluid/filter changed?

By 2003 [13 years I had installed 2 brand new transmission] the first due to as built weakness [no external cooler or ATF changes]. The 2nd was replaced at 180k of use at 230k odometer.

The point is periodic refreshing is just a standard operation. Something one budgets for every 7-8 years. Saving that $500 per year assures you have what you need.

The number one reason used cars are traded is for a defective transmission since engine can last 2-3 times longer.

Trans fluid was nice and pink and the level was good when I checked a week ago.

Trans fluid and filter was changed 20k ago.

Forgot to mention trans sometimes takes a while to engage drive on cool mornings and occasionally in summer.

Service manual says to check the oil pump and Torque Converter for the noise issue.

On the stalling issue check:

Control linkageControl valve assemblyShift solenoid A and BFluid temperature sensor

So today went to start it to drive to the workshop...

Starts fine as always, idled fine left it for a minute or so.

Engage reverse, Fine! (WOOOHOOO)

Select drive...Takes about 10 seconds and engages (this has been happening prior to current issue)

Now car is driving fine in reverse drive and park and neutral there is a whirring noise from 800-1000rpm the noise does not get worse or better due to the temperature of the car but the car drives as smooth as normal.

I cant hear that same noise at revs above about 1000 the car shifts and responds as normal.

Thoughts so far?

Could the whirring noise you're hearing be a frozen idler pulley bearing?

Internals could be covered in varnish if the transmission hasn't been properly maintained. I've used Lucas transmission treatment and Lubeguard with good success. Have you done a transmission flush?

I doubt idler pulley bearing but there is a possibility.

The old trans fluid was drained and refilled. Is that what you would call a flush?

Pretty sure there is some lucas trans treatment in there at the moment.

A flush uses special solvent [BG Quick Clean for transmissions] to place varnish and loose friction material in suspension with ATF. After a 15 minute recirculation, all of ATF is drained and replaced.
