Anyone ever done it, or maybe know how?

I am working on finishing my 6 speed G50 and since I will not be using a speedometer, my power steering will not work. I am trying to bypass this, that way I can have powersteering even though I will not have a working speed-o.

There is a pressure switch on the power steering pump and also on the solenoid on the steering rack... I'd have to look at the wiring diagram but I've never heard of anyone not running a speedo, so I doubt this has come up.

Well here it is, I found a way to do it by trial and error of messing with stock components. So for anyone who is doing a transmission swap, engine swap or what ever on a G50, its possible to keep your powersteering!

First you start with the speed assist solenoid, mount it to some sort of fixture so you can unscrew the solenoid.

solenoid apart with the regulation fitting and spring.

Now the spring used to go between the regulator fitting and the black case. But you're going to take the spring and place it between the regulator fitting and the solenoid. This will lock the fitting into the "slow speed" mode, so you always have full time power steering whether your speedo works or not!

Now screw it all back together, re-install it and have fun!

1995 Q45: I am having a problem with the power steering going to full high speed mode "no power steering". Occasionally it will turn on to full "slow speed" mode, then back to no power steering. I was thinking about replacing the solenoid, but was going to try your fix temporarily. QUESTION: Did you leave the power disconnected, or did you re-connect it?

The problem I was having with mine was the computer to the power steering assist would over-heat and shut off causing it to go into failsafe until it cooled down and then repeat. I ended up replacing the power steering computer.

I followed Mikes -(IThaJ0kaI) procedure yesterday on my 95 Q45. It worked great. My power steering is back. I was wondering how you devised this bypass fix. Very interesting. I called the local Infinity Dealer parts dept. (Mobile,Al) They wanted $618.00 for the solenoid. Not a stock item. They called it
an “Electrical Control valve”. She also quoted me a new rack from Infinity for $2340.00!!!
Thanks for the great information posted on this forum!!!! Joe

It most likely is the computer for the steering assist. I haven't known a power steering solenoid to go bad.

How do I upload a picture of my notes from this project?
