Dear Group,

Background:I have a 1992 with gray leather. My driver's bottom seat cushion is showing its wear. I also have an additional matching gray interior complete with three gray front seats (2 P/S, 1 D/S) in excellent shape.

Question:Are the bottom seat cushions, not leather covers, interchangeable? I would like to dissemble the extra PS seat and use the bottom seat cushion on my current D/S side seat. I must retain the D/S side seat back to retain the armrest, and I believe the D/S side seat has more adjustments than the P/S. Has anyone done this?

Notes: I want to do this rather than just swap the extra D/S seat, so I do not end up with two extra P/S seats. In addition, the two P/S seats show less wear than the extra D/S seat I have.

Thank you in advannce for you insight.

JD

Byron at T3 South Cobb can disassemble the covers and swap on frames =====passenger can be convertered to drivers.

Easier to swap covers than disassemble the mechanical parts of a seat [2 seats].

The closest the manual comes to explaining this can be found here...

The armrest is removable as the diagram will show. If the seat cushions can be exchanged, then all you'd probably need to do is cut a hole in the right side for the armrest axle. There is a trim that covers the hole so no one would ever know.

BTW, I'm also here in ATL with cracked gray leather driver's seat. Wouldn't mind taking one off your hands and getting together with you to see how it comes apart. You know what they say about two heads.....

Can you swap out the newer G50 seats (94+) into and older G50? Are the seat harnesses the same?

That's a good question - I've been wondering the same as I prefer the older style seats. Newer seats have power headrests so it may be a bit different.

Dear Q45Tech,

Thank you for your feedback. I made the assumption there was no handedness to the bottom seat cushions, but I just wanted some confirmation before I embarked on the project.

I was originally just considering swapping the whole cushion, but as you stated, swapping just the cover may be a more practical approach. I recovered the leather seats on my Corvettes and it was fairly easy. But, since I had both new foam and new leather there was no shrinkage, wear-in issues to deal with. In the process of restoring seat frames, I have tried to disassemble and reassemble seats cushions before with used materials limited success. Sometimes the wear patterns causes the materials not to lie smoothly or once 'unsprung' there are a pain to pull back together.

DrewQ45,

Thanks for the offer to participate. I am not ready to pull-the-trigger on this project yet. I consider this a winter project. I will plan to reach out to you when I am. I do have several slight cracks I need to repair and some wear on the DS bolster of my current seats. I may just repair/fill the cracks and redye/spray both front seats and the armrest. The restoration process is pretty straight forward, just time consuming.

Additionally, I liked the way you armrest turned out.

Dear DrewQ45,

I'll let you know if I find some nice G50 gray leather front seats. They are tough to find without damage. I stumbled across a totaled Q that the insurance company had scheduled to be picked-up by the scrap yard. I got the carte blanche to strip whatever I wanted. So, I pretty much took the whole interior.

Have you considered restoring your seats? Strip them down, fill-in the cracks and then redye them. It is time consuming and would put your seats out of commission for a couple days, but you can have the dye color matched easily enough. I would estimate less than $200 in materials.

If your current seats are solid, at least you know what you have.

Should you have any damaged panels or piping, just repair it, regardless of color, before you redye. You'll never notice the difference.
