i have a quest.. How do i know if Rack & Pinion is going out. I have a leak somewhere and i filled the PS container with AFT transmission fluid because i was out of PS fluid. I drive the car normal There is no problems to my knowledge. The only problem i find is that theres is a leak somewhere, and it must be touching the manifold or something because it causes a slight smoke. I took it to my mech and he says it my Rack & Pinion . I kinda dont believe him but he says 509$ to replace it. Steering doesnt get hard on me. I havent heard it make that VVRRRRRRR noise like my 93 did. ANd it hasnt gotten stifff on my. I check the PS fluid every week, and it doesnt look like it got alow at all. What is yall opinion? And do u think my Rack & Pinion is going out or is the price too high? Thanks for opinion. This is a 95Q.

theres no way PS fluid can hit the manfolds unless something is really wrong.. If steering feels tight, then its hard to say... More likely your valve covers are leaking.... UNless it was leaking out of a return line, but for it to leak that much itd be making a huge mess....

If your not losing much if any PS fluid (how much per month would you say you've added?) then i wouldnt worry too much....... My PS leaks enough that I have to add a tiny bit once or twice a YEAR.

$509 is an inexpensive replacement price [probably just a resealed repainted so called remanned unit ] not a new rack price.

These inexpensive remans often fail quickly or never feel as good [on center] as what you had due to unrepaired pinion or rack gear wear.........after all they are just resealed and repainted not really tested except for leaks [sometimes].

You get what you pay for.

Put some Lucas conditioner in there and see what happens. Here's a good thread:
