I think the starter motor on my Q45 may have carked it. It is a 94 model Australian delivered. Where abouts is the starter located? Is on the drivers side? I have never removed one before so I am a bit new to these things. Has anyone got any photo's I could look at?

Also, if I manage to get it off, are they repairable and are VH45 starters interchangeable with any other Nissan starters?

Thanks alot
Brendon

Usually the brushes just wear out especially after 16 years. 4 starts per day ~ 20k.
The unit is special size due to cranking V8 requirement.
Away from comminality always buy a spare same color/year car for spare parts.

Thanks for the reply mate. Where abouts is the starter located? Is it hard to get to/remove myself.

That is good advice regarding spare parts car, but over here in Australia it isn't as easy as just getting another car the same year and colour. There aren't alot of these getting around.

Is it possible to repair/rebuild starter motors?

Thanks again for the help.

If you have a local starter/alternator rebuilder they should be able to recondition it. Check out the FSM (factory service manual) at www.nicoclub.com/FSM/

It's for the US market LHD model, but it should give you a starting point. You might need to look to the opposite side of the engine... I don't know if it's reversed or not.

Thanks for the link mate. Found the section about starter in the EL section, and the removal/installation section is absolutely no help whatsoever lol.

Good for you mate. I haven't been to automotive trade school. I can do other mechanical things, but like I said I have never pulled a starter motor off before, and haven't had a lot of experience work on G50 Q45's... I have read your posts and instead of acting all high and mighty all the time, why can't you just help other members out?

Based on some 47 years of work, almost anyone can become an automotive technican given enough training time and hard work.
Exprisoners [professional murders, child molesters, psychos, or conartists are exceptions] who come out with a decent attitude often get 2nd chances in this industry with great results.

Remember I do mostly therorectical work [wireless data and sensors] not day in day out repairs, I have changed 1 starter on a Q to disassemble and view failure modes, but usually pay techs to do the dirty work.

Every 6 months I have to REEXPLAIN that the tech in Q45tech stands for technology not technican. My early goal was to analyse and understand the physics of the Q45 systems which in 1990 was cutting edge for automobiles.

Fair enough mate. I have no doubt that if my goal in life was to become an automotive technician I could do it, and do it well. And I would learn very fast too, as I am reasonably mechanically minded. The thing is, I don't want to do it as a job, my question was simply could anyone please give me some advice for pulling it out and replacing it. The approximate location, if there are any tricks to pulling it out that would be handy to know, whether it would be best to attack from above or underneath etc. I have never removed one before and am keen to do it myself, I was just hoping someone who has done it before could give me some pointers.

And as for your username, that isn't something that I have questioned. Fair enough it stands for technology, but little things like that don't bother me anyway, i just join forums like this to get some help when I need it. Thanks for clearing it up though, and if I ever need any more technical questions answered I know who to ask now :)

I am about to go and have a look and hopefully have a go at removing it, but as no one has been able to give me any decent advice I am flying blind. Wish me luck :p

It is not possible... I have spent friggin ages trying to remove this bloody thing and it is impossible!! There is a steering shaft in the way, and probably other wiring associated with the steering wheel being on the same side as the starter. I can't get a 14mm socket and extension on to the bottom bolt, and because of the steering shaft I can't get a spanner on to the top one...

Obviously few in US/world have even seen a left drive Q/President much less worked on one.

Learn Japanese [find Japanese speaker] and discuss with [by phone or email] a few Nissan Tech in Japan where it was a daily task would be fastest way.

Yeh I realise that. I was more after an approximate location, but once I knew what to look for it was easy enough to find. I found a bit of a walk through here on nico that mentioned it is quite easy, and the first thing I thought was you lucky US biggers have the steering on the wrong side, so you guys have it a bit easier haha :)

That might be an idea. I have a few mates in Japan that may be able to help with that.
