Would a standard PS pump use less HP than an Active PS pump (Active pump w/loop back). I entertaining thoughts of going standard and am wondering if I'd have an MPG benefit by using a standard PS pump.

The PS belt widths/lengths are different so you would need a different crank pulley. At most you are talking about 1-2 HP parasitic loss at 6,000 rpm.

I agree with Q45tech. Any horsepower gain would be so slight that it will take a very sensitive chassis dynamometer setup and multiple 'runs' to measure it. Even running the active system is not a significant horsepower consumer on most roads (the more undulations the higher the 'active' load. )

Curious why the thoughts of changing from what is arguably the most sophisticated suspension system on the road?

I Finally experienced an active system related failure--the active side of the pump on my wife's car ('92, 150K) started leaking into the PS side--slowly overfilling the PS reservoir! Gotta do a reseal job on it now.

She was 350 miles away over in Louisiana when she noticed 'the puddle' under the car. A 'tune-up' place said )got a coolant leak, and oil leak, and ? Never checked coolant level before making the 'coolant leak', mistaking the yellow-green active fluid color for antifreeze. I talked with the 'technician' on th ephone and walked him through a correct inspection/diagnosis long distance. Kinda hard to swallow he couldn't tell the difference between green oil and antifreeze solution--much less did not even check the coolant reservoir or remove radiator cap to look-see. I have to admit the 'diagnosis' of the leaking from active to PS side and overflowing PS reservoir was a 3AM eureka! moment in my sleep.

The 'brown oil' leak was from a leaking oil pressure switch (leaked 3 qts of oil in those 350 miles! wasn't leaking when she left home. Repairs cost $62.50--$19 for switch, $36 installation, 3 qts of oil, tax.

Texasoil - not an easy choice for me. I feel extra guilty w/all the support you've thrown my way. The truth is that I do not have the time or tools, further handicapped by my lack of DIY fitness (unlike others, like yourself on this board). When I bought this car I did not expect to have problems finding a mechanic who knew how to work on this car, such as properly bleed the system/replace the boots etc. Furthermore I have been so cash strapped/house poor I couldn't buy replacement accumulators as I needed to. If I keep my Q I will be funding the conversion with the funds from the sale of my Benz.

Things are futher compounded by the fact that I commute approx 2.25 - 2.5 hrs a day + I'm both a husband and father. Needless to say I have very little time to myself.

So - it simplifies my life to simplify my Q. I feel guilt in converting an A to a non A as I realize that these are rather rare cars. Plus my wife will kill me if I go on a quest to buy yet another car - this topic is a source of fiction. My Q does have a great service history, 8 new injectors and new water pump.
