The story. One of the hoses that came from our power steering reservoir was leaking so we went out and bought a hose and replaced it.But during this, we realized that there was a piece of metal wrapping the middle of the original hose, and we were curious what it was all about.

So we cut up the old hose and took a peak at it, and it looked like it is something that tries to slow down or choke that part of the hose. Now the diameter of the small choke inside the hose isn't all that tiny, it is only slightly smaller than the actual hose itself.

The Question. Is that slight choke a vital part of the power steering/hicas system?

The Hicas light now comes on for 1-3 seconds after start-up, but the car runs fine.

Red outlined section is the part where the choke is.

I'm sure there is a reason for it - but I don't know enough about hydraulics to say what that reason is. My guess would be that it's just a reinforcement to keep the hose from crimping there.

I think I would buy a new OEM hose and install that...

Preventing crimping was my dad's first guess.I'm not sure why it's making the HICAS light to turn on for a few seconds on startup though.
