i was just wondering if anyone knew what infiniti specifically did in their paint process that made the G50 paint SO durable. i know most of us here with G50's are still amazed by the paint (even on Q's that weren't garaged or washed/waxed regularly). the reason why i ask, on a BMW forum, a poster made it sound like from 1990 on, all paint processes were basically the same with about 3 paint manufacturers that supplied all car companies. i'm sure that might be true but the way it's applied and clearcoating techniques must be different, with some being better than others (the early model neon's being a good example of horrible paint!!).

Infiniti was late to jump on the "water-based" paint bandwagon that the dumbestic automakers used in the late 80's-early 90's.

My dad had a 88 Dakota that lost the ENTIRE roof and hood paint in chunks as big as typing paper, just fell right off the primer.

Infiniti used a 3-stage paint on most of its colors as well as a color-matching primer (in order to minimize ugly chips), as well as cross-linked paint technology that cost a bloody fortune back in the day.

My 95's IPQ paint is STILL as glossy as that of a brand new Infiniti to this day - AND it has none of the "orange-peel" effect that plagues so many new cars.

Does anyone know if the same paint process was utilized on the Y33?
