I have been noticing that when my AC has been running maybe 20 minutes that there is a strange odor in the cooling air. It is a bit like that of a burnt out transformer, sort of acrid, sort of chemical. If the AC is turned off for a few minutes it disappears and then returns again some minutes later after the AC is started. My cooling temperature control functions in an all or nothing mode, so it is normally going full cold but at low fan. By the way, the fan switch works fine and the AC works great. Any ideas?

Your fan motor is cooking. It has already taken out the Darlington transistor, which is why you only have all or none on the fan.

The fan switch is working fine. It is the temperature control that is erratic. I will check for fan odor in non-AC mode. Thanks for your idea.

Check fan motor, darlington resistor, and even valve cover leaks creating smell from seeping oil on headers/engine and being drawn inside car thru HVAC air intake
