I need to change my 3rd brake light bulbs (high-mounted stop light bulbs). According to my owner's manual, they are a 18w bulb #921. I've read in other threads that only oem and Sylvania LL are suitable. Some other people don't approve of the Sylvania at all.

I just spoke with a Sylvania customer service representative, and she claims that they don't make a 921LL, only a 921. She said they haven't made the 921LL in over 4 years.

Also, she said that the 921 is a 1.4 amp 12.8 volt bulb which means that:Watts = amps x voltsW = 1.4 x 12.8W = 17.92Basically, she said that the bulbs they make should be fine and comparable to oem, since oem calls for 18w

Is she right? Is there any writing on the oem bulb to identify it fron a non-oem?

I bought the oem bulbs for $9. They are Toshiba and came in a box.

Bet you didn't get them form Joe.

Even my ripoff dealer (list +15%) was less than $6 a couple of years ago.

The thought is that the LL version of the Sylvanias should have better quality control - so you're more likely to get a bulb close to 18W. Honestly, I would either order OEM from Joe, or just toss those in and see what happens. Most of the brake lamp issues we see are not from the CHMSL, but from the two main lamp socket assemblies.

I can't wait for shipping from Joe for something of this value. I live in Canada. I do buy from Joe when I need other things though.

I didn't have time to check, because my active suspension gave me hell today.
