Well, I think it's time to replace the exhaust (from headers to tailpipe), and was wondering if I could hear what different things you all have done. I know there are no aftermarket kits, and I will be building my own. I know that I am not going to pick up any HP here, and I do know about back pressure, so hopefully that will ward off all the usual comments about those. I am just looking to hear what each of you have done and how you like it.

Also, anyone know off hand how much replacement exhaust manifolds are?

Thanks,Jack

My car is originally from Florida and it had a lot of leaks. So after all my options I decided to go with a Magnaflow exhaust. OEM was a little bit more $$.

Starting right after the pre-cats (on the headers)... leads to separate cats that lead to separate mufflers. The stock system had dual exhaust but lead to a single muffler. I don't really know whats better, an X-pipe or two single pipes like I have.

For exhaust noise... I didn't want it to be too loud and I think with all the cats and mufflers the noise is at the right level without any resonators. You can certainly hear it in the car but its not overpowering or annoying. Would show you a video clip but it doesn't do justice.

Thanks for the quick reply! Did you put the mufflers where the stock ones are and then jsut straight pipes where that big arse resonator of a suitcase is in the back? That is what I was thinking about doing - dual pipes, duall cat's, H pipe, dual mufflers out the back without that beast of a resonator. Oh, and maybe some fancy pants exhaust tips.

Just remove the rear 'suitcase' muffle and put pipes in. Sounds wicked.

Not that it makes a difference but the first two "mufflers" are the resonators and the suitcase muffler is actually the muffler. Many people just cut that out and put straight pipes there and that's what I'd have if I didn't have the turbo there. Leave the OEM resonators. I have them removed as well for mine and without the turbo it is WAY too loud/resonating. I hated it without the resonators.

If your exhaust system is in good shape but just want a change that would be a cheap easy first step to see how you like it. I had it that way for a while before I got my turbo done and it sounds awesome. When the engine is cold it can be a little raspy but after it's warm it doesn't do that any more. Was that way for mine anyway.

I have had the exact same experience. Had my rear suitcase muffler removed Xmas '06, and haven't looked back. A bit raspy when cold, but that goes as soon as things have warmed up.

On a side note, the SB County Sherrifs who pulled me over a few days ago and wanted to cite me with excessive display of speed for going 30 in a 30 (yes, thats right, they told me I must have been going 40 or 45, I wasn't, and they didn't tag me with radar, so had to let me go) didn't notice anything out of the ordinary; that is, until they said I could go and heard the rumble when I started the car up to leave. That left me with a smile after 20 minutes of wasted time answering stupid questions over and over. Ahhh, I'm about to rant about those officers some more, I better stop.

To sum up: 1. trash the big muffler 2. have fun making noise with the happy pedal.

Just maintained it. Love the stock sound and performance. Don't want to sound like a pickup truck.

Hey Frank, sounds like a killer setup! You don't happen to have an audio clip, do you?

My 95 Q Touring has the rear muffler delete. It made a difference in my fuel mileage and the car is a bit faster. I think most people are happy with this mod. Low cost and a little bit of performance, best of both worlds.

More power and better MPG ? Why didnt Infiniti engineers think of doing that and save millions in government EPA fees?

Tch tch! He didn't say "better", he said "different." I imagine the 4.08 probably had a greater effect, although AZHitman said his mileage ddin't suffer the same 15% difference in ratio.

This is just a guess, but I think noise levels had something to do with it.

You get a C- for not paying attention. I said my 95 Q, which doesn't have the 4.08 diff, as opposed to my 94 Q which does have it and is turbocharged.

When I said difference, I meant a positive one. Does that rub you the wrong way, kitty?

Because most luxury car buyers moan and groan when they hear their car making noise, even if it's good noise.

i do need to get an audio clip, but what i did was took the rear section off and replaced it with a vibrant flat black muffler. at idle and revving, it seems to be no different than stock, but when you take it out for a spin, its a whole other story. it has a deep tone to it thats almost unnoticeable until you go WOT. its sweet.

BTW here's the muffler i went with:

But that's a single inlet/dual outlet....How/why'd you do that or is the one you used different?

No that is Ozzie from NICO's car. That and the M5 kriesseig exhaust clips on Youtube are bookmarked. Absolutely love the tones.

My exhaust was eventually tweaked to sound just like Ozzie's.Got compliments on it everywhere. I miss having a quality Q45.

Oh yeah, I have a 1997 BMW M3 that I just got. I'll be doing some exhaust on it soon. Can't wait!

they did not offer that in a dual inlet. with the straight through design it feels almost the same as before, just a little different tone.
