In SD I was ticketed for 85 in a 75 by a police officer in Salem SD, a town a few miles off the interstate. I neglected to slow down as I was passing a rest area.

I got ticketed twice; once for 6 over, once for 7 over, in SD - both on wide open, deserted I-29 at night. Hell of a way to get income. I haven't set foot in the State since. In Tennessee, on the other hand, they don't seem to care how fast you go. Between Nashville and Knoxville, traffic frequently runs over 80 mph.

(Didn't mean to hijack the thread, sorry.)

Which brings us to another topic....

the left hand lane, also known as the passing lane, seems to have taken on a life of its own. Do state driving exams still cover lane changes and what the passing lane is for?

I am not all about road rage... and, since I spend a great deal of time in "grandpa mode" (until I get the chain guides dealt with) I am frequently in the right hand lane putzing along like I am in no hurry. But, seriously, the way people hang out in that left hand lane you would think they were paying membership to be there!

I had the opportunity to go to Scotland this summer (yes, I did go to the The Open Championship at St. Andrews in case you were curious), and driving on their roads was WONDERFUL! The roads were in better shape, the drivers were more attentive, more curteous, and generally better, the system for road signs was vastly superior, and they are absolutely committed to staying out of that passing lane. Plus, for those of you who have not had the rare pleasure of driving on a road system that uses round-a-bouts, you are truly missing something. I absolutely fell in love with the road system in Scotland. Man, I want to take my Q to Scotland and spend the rest of my life playing golf and driving places.

The state of Washington began going after left lane slow pokes. During rush hour they'll run a trooper down the left lane with his lights on to keep it clear or fine people with a line of 5 or more cars behind them.

Ahem ... just some corrections for those who are Dakota-challenged (almost everyone, in my experience) ... I-94 passes through ND, I-90 passes through SD ... The Black Hills are in SD, nothing you ever heard of is in ND ... ND is not the end of the world, but you can see it from here ... The last time I drove in SD, the troopers were writing tickets for 5 mph over the limit, unlike every other state I ever drove in, including ND, which give you 10 mph over the limit (I drive by troopers through 9 States all day long at 10 mph over, on my trips south) ... While there are only two "cities" on I-94 in ND, the troopers ARE on the Interstates, and write tickets for 10+ mph over the 75 mph limit.
ND is the home of the larges Sunflower crop in the world. I think, like 90% of all sunflower oil is produced in ND.

Fun factoid: Most credit card companies and sub prime lenders are in South Dakota.
