Hi everyone. I just bought a beautiful '09 G37x with 9K miles and couldn't be happier with the car. Before buying, I was considering between a G37 and the BMW 335xi. One thing that I seemed to notice was that the Bimmer would "explode" to speed from a dead stop. In other words--from a stop, floor the accelerator and the 335 would rock you back into your seat immediately. I drove multiple 335's and they were all like that.

One the other hand, none of the G37s were like that. Yes, they had very strong acceleration, but they all seemed a bit more mellow on the acceleration.

Now after buying one, I've noticed that my car has a lag or hesitation when I hit the gas from a dead stop. I'd say it's about a one second hesitation. By hesitation, I'm not saying that it revs, drops out, then revs again--I'm saying that it has kind of a "wind up" for a second before it really goes. Kind of rubber-band-like.

I'm just wondering if this is normal for other G37 drivers? Who out there has driven a BMW 335i? I also wonder if there may be some sort of tuning refinement that my car needs.

By the way, I chose the G37 over the Bimmer because it's more reliable and less costly to fix, and the car is more subtle look-wise than a Bimmer. I view it as more of a "stealth car" than the Bimmer--in other words, less people will know exactly what it is i.e., sports car. I didn't want to be a "story" in my neighborhood.

The G37 is limited to Torque and Hp in the first few sets of gears. The wind up you are experiencing is the same with all of our cars. You have to kind of trick the car to get it to accelerate from a dead stop to full speed through manual mode. The new Camero's do the same thing.

It also has to do with the VDC. If you do a roll-out in the car in Manual more with the VDC off, you will not experience the wind up, however you will already be rolling a little.

Thanks for the heads up on it. It's interesting, because that's exactly what I thought may be going on, i.e., that the car was purposely limiting it's torque at the low speeds to, perhaps, limit slipping on the road. I also wondered about the VDC. I remember taking a G35x through it's paces on a test drive and I felt something that seemed like slippage between gears when I was accelerating with a floored pedal. I even took it back to the salesman and complained that something must be wrong with the transmission. After some head-scratching he suggested that we turn the VDC off and try again. Sure enough, the perceived transmission slippage was no longer there.

Anyway, thanks again for explaining it. I love the car.

I also looked at the 335i, but the car with the same options was 10-12k more. Plus it has a fuel pump issue in the N54. The good thing is that you can chip that car for an extra 100/100 hp/tq!! The interior was also a step down from the Infiniti imo.

As for your hesitation, I've noticed it a few times and it's worse from a 5-10mph roll. I almost always drive with the VDC off now...except in the rain or at night.

It really sounds like the vdc might be kicking in. Are you guys hitting the gas so quickly that the computer might be momentarily holding the command just in case it is an accident? Could it be something like the engine stuttering?

I have seen many people complain they accelerate too fast I have only see a small handful of issues like this. neat.

BMWs tend to accelerate in a strange way, they are like Hondas in their deceptive speed. I personally like the snarl of the 3.7....but I would get in far too much trouble playing with it. The interiors of bmws always smell like crayons and I do not care for that, but that is just me. The stigma is the only thing that is worse.

yep when i want to play... turn the VDC off, go manual mode, and the car will do what you command. well up to a point, pushing the "vdc off" button seems to just rasie the limit befor VDC will kick in, as i have still activated the VDC light even with the "VDC off" button pressed. But it doesnt seem to cut throttle on the "second level" activation. Maybe its just a light and the ECU is ignoring the wheel slippage.

could you elighten me on that steve?
