i got my g37s in december and i have gone in for 2 oil changes since i got it. each time i've gone in i would get the dealership to check my brakes because everytime i step on the breaks the steering wheel would shake slightly back and fourth so i told them and they say i need the rotors machined. so ok i machine them and that fixes the problem for about 2 months and then it comes back. but at 100 dollars each time they machine the front rotors per oil change plus the cost of the oil change thats just crazy. does anyone else have this problem?

This is unusual. I would dare say that there is a 50-50 chance that your rotors may be a result of factory defect. Has any G-37 owner experienced this problem yet? The dealership should have owned up and replaced all your rotors under warranty if this was the issue. Even my little nissan that was made many moons ago, does not have such an issue. Have you replaced the brake pads since it started this problem or are you just machining the rotors without changing brake pads? If you haven't changed brake pads, no matter how much machining you do, you will keep getting the same effecte, and there is a 50-50 chance this could also be the problem.

Another thing that could cause this effect you suggest could be rust on rotors. Sometimes, rust can cause the brake pads to wear prematurely and unevenly. I noticed it in my car when I bought it. I replaced the first brake pads, and machined the rotors. It felt like it griped a little better after this.

G37rocket,

yeah the stock brakes are not for racing. If you drive like I do you may want to invest in aftermarket rotors.

Below is my brake upgrade thread

Machineing or turning the rotors takes metal off the rotor correct. Then repeated machineing gives you less metal on the rotor, which means it heats up even quicker and warps faster. So I doubt machineing is the way to go long term.

To answer your question, no my brakes or steering wheel do not vibrate. 2008-G37-6mt

The G37s's brake rotor size/mass should really not be in questions. The Sport model's brakes are a massive 14 x 1.3 inches. That's as big as many aftermarket BBKs.

That said, its not likely to be a problem of overall excess heat, especially under everyday driving.

OP: Is the area you drive in hilly?

Your dealer should have offered to replace the rotors free of charge. Unless you track your car, there's no reason that your GODZILLA brakes should have this type of problem.

Infiniti brakes are known to be soft, but this is ridiculous.

What are you doing to them, I have seen a few of these that people drive the hell out of and there still not replaced after 30k. If it was a defect in the rotor itself it would most likely only effect one of them, the same goes for most of the major brake components. Do you ride the brakes or slow abruptly there are only a few things that will cause overheating or warping. The dealership may give you a set or two but if there is no issue it's pretty hard for them to get rotors covered under warranty. Are you noticing any diving or brake application issues that may indicate a problem? Machining does in fact remove a few thousandths of an inch off each time they make a pass on it. A typical cutting session may take one (if your lucky), two on average and three or more if they are warped. If they are warped in excess of 0.005" of lateral variance they should be replaced.

Ask the dealership how they are turning your rotors? If they are taking them off the car or keeping them on the car for turning. Never would of thought possible but had a Acura TL in my shop and we would turn the customer's rotor's then two months he would come back because they were warped again. Well we got a on the car brake machine turned the rotors and the have been good ever since.

I had rotor problems from the get go. Something got on them and I could see them spotted. One of the Infiniti dealers I use was going to lightly sand them to get the crap off of them but I could not leave the car with them for an extra day as I had to be in another state for 3 days of work so I had to drive it. By the time I got it into the local Infiniti dealership they had hot spotted and needed a slight turn.

One good thing about Nissan is that they don't skimp on rotors like US manufacturers do. I've had the rotors on my 2k2 Maxima turned twice in 139k miles and they are still well in spec. My wifes old Cougar had 38k on it when it needed a brake job and they had to replace the rotors because Ford skimps on them and they are pretty much disposable.

In the future I will probably upgrade to vented rotors anyway.

It sounds like someone might have sprayed wheel cleaner on your hot rotors. I have seen some of the chemicals cause pretty nasty spots. The only other thing I can think of that would cause spots on the rotors is over heating but you would most likely notice a blue tint to them. If that is the case my hats off to you.

Yeah, could have been me but I don't clean that car any different than my Maxima and I've never had that problem using the same cleaners.

It's more about the temperature of the rotors than the chemicals used. We use an organic (city laws require it) it is not a harsh chemical at all and it still can damage rotors. I learned this the hard way on my own car, I drove to the car wash and proceeded to spray cleaner on my wheels and it hit the rotors and sizzled, I though nothing of it at the time but it lead to problems right from the start.

I don't use cleaner on the wheels. I wash them by hand and then wipe them down with Mothers detailer (which may have gotten on the rotors but I have no idea) to finish cleaning them.

That's the way to go about it, I have seen people use acid that is so caustic it burns through the clear. I do the same thing, just a quick wipe every few days and they look fine.I only think rotor damage is likely when you spray something on hot rotors. It may have happened before you took possession of the car, don't go yelling at the dealer they should just fix it the first time under warranty. The rotors aren't blue are they with oblong streak spots?

If only more people would realize that if you go to the dealer or anywhere with a positive attitude, and remained calm until you had a reason not too than everyone's day would be just a little easier.
