I've cranked up several cold G37 cars and noticed a pinging that does go away, but does anybody know that if this pinging will cause long term damage to the engine?? :gotme
I've always associated any pinging with metal wear. Am I wrong here? :gotme

And, with gas prices heading north coupled with unrest over seas, I'm thinking that there will be premium shortages again soon.....
With the G37 engines they basically say to push it rather than use regular.
Anybody else concerned with this?? :gotme
Are you going to leave them parked?? :gotme

I think you need to worry a lot less about the gas, because prices are going to do what they do, you cant control it, and worry more about the pinging.

Im not a mechanic, but from what i do know, a ping or a knock noise means that the air to gas mix isnt burning properly in you cylinders. The ping is the sound of the air combusting unevenly. Your not gonna be getting the right amount of power and over like a real long period of time it will mess up your engine...IMO get it checkd out, worth the money to fix it now.

Sorry if I was misleading, but I'm not worried about the gas.
Worried about the lack of Premium in the future and having to burn regular.
And, also the PINGING of G37's at start up.

Currently I have two G35's and I'm always looking at my next car.
My coupe requires Premium. My sedan does not. I run prem. in both.

Have looked at several G37's that pinged when first started.

the tech at the dealership said that the use of non easter oil causes more noise in the engine especially from a cold start but wont hurt the engine. As i was worried about the same thing when i first heard my G37 start up in cold weather. But as you see after about a minute the loud sound goes away once the oil is heated and flowing. I just keep synthetic oil in my car as i'm not paying for easter oil just to reduce noise of an engine i love to hear. By the way if you get an oil change at the dealer all they put in the car is regular Mobile ONE dino oil.

I have just over 30k miles on my G37 engine, and they are hard miles as i dont baby this car at all. My g37x has been tracked 3 times, 3 long road trips, and i have a heavy foot so it sees high rpms on a regular. I have had zero problems so far, and coming from a 2005 g35x i dont expect any as the old Vq35 engine took my beating for 70k miles and if you didnt hear/see me start the engine you wouldnt even know the car was running.

There will probably always be octane additives. There are too many cars out there that burn premium. Let's just hope we don't have that problem in our lifetime. I put regular in Rambo one time. I made it about 5 miles and it started knocking like crazy. A bottle of 104+ fixed that right up. Never tried it again.

I burned 87 octane in my G right before I sold it. Roads were so bad I knew I wouldn't be driving hard. Didn't have any noise at all (unless I just couldn't hear it for my music).

yea that are a lot of arguments for or against HAVING to use premium. For example my cousin has an S60. and the owners manual says that you should run premium for "best performance and gas mileage" Engines on newer cars have whats called "knock sensors" so if you put a lower grade in the engine, the engine realizes and reduces output a little bit to compensate, so that the engine doesnt knock with the lower fuel like it used to back in the day.

I too was worried about the 37's cold start up noise. I had 4 G35's prior that never made these noises. I went by my dealer and they said it is perfectly normal on the 2010's and 11's. It does not sound like pinging (detonation). I put Royal Purple oil in and it still makes the same sounds at start up. I'm relieved to hear it's not just my car doing this. It almost sounds like cam chains not getting enough lube??? I stopped worrying about it - that's what leases are for.....

I don't think it's pinging either...I put in ester oil and it still made the noise.

SVT, I wouldn't worry about that. Now the gas...if you use regular, just don't hammer it. The ECU should compensate.

Thanks,
So, it could be a noisy chain that takes a while to get lubed as opposed to a pinging......not sure if I'm more comfortable with that since I did have a tensioner go in our 05 sedan and then 3 more trips into Infiniti and 1 month of loaners before they could keep the engine light off.....had the whole front of the engine apart. Replaced the adjustable cam sprockets...Guess it was just a fluke.

Had a 02 Exploder that had very noisy chain due to the tensioner going bad. Step on the gas and the "pinging" noise was incredible!
This was the 3rd car I repoed from my oldest son due to nonpayment of loan and insurance and sold.... :slap: (that slap is for me!)

I've been secretly been looking at some 08 coupes and wondering about that start up noise.
Guess we need a thread for most G37 miles and any issues (hopefully none).
(of course, I've also been looking at 400+HP NA 5.0's too... :gapteeth: )

Skyler was fairly noisy at start up. It was more of a clicking sound than a pinging sound. I just ignored it.

Get the 5.0 Rich. You have been with Infiniti too long. :gapteeth:

you need to spice it up and 440 hp of course helps. LOL

Originally I was thinking to switch to another G myself also but as of now I am not sure. Not even sure with my wife's car and she will need a nw one soon. I will worry about what to get after the G next year.

The noise is a characteristic of Our V V E L.
It is because it takes a few seconds for oil pressure to reach the V V E L actuator.
The valvetrain, being at the top of the engine, is basically unlubricated at startup.
Infiniti recomennds Esther oil because it "clings" better to metal parts.

Run a couple squirts of Lucas oil additive

I describe the noise as timing chain slop more then pinging. If I run Lucas Synthetic oil stabalizer no noise.... without noise.

I'm at almost 98k miles still runs great

Lucas makes some GREAT products. I use the f/i cleaner. Works great, has an upper cylinder lubricant and is an easy bottle to pour without making a mess.

Your G35 engine makes a timing chain noise??? When did this start up??
Neither one of ours does. I thought this was only with the G37 engines.

Have used Lucas gas treatment too.
But, remember hearing NOT to use any octane bosters in G engines back when we couldn't get prem.....Maybe Steve?? Maybe Poyz?? Maybe old age?? :gapteeth:

Lucas makes a couple products,

I use the Synthetic Oil Additive in my G just a couple squirts in the oil fill tube after I drain the old oil but before I put in the new oil.

I seriously doubt the noise I hear is timing chain slop because it goes away once the motor warms up but timing chain slop is the best way to describe it. I bought by G in July of 2007 as a lease return with 14k miles on it. It has done that the entire time I have owned it.
