BMW was the first to publicise the idea of using it. Back in the mid to late 90's IIRC. Basically, it uses Electromagnetic solenoids to actuate each valve. So the valves can be opened and closed completely independent of the crankshaft. One major benefit comes from the fact that motors with TB's work by restricting the motor at all times except at WOT. At part throttle and no throttle, the engine fights against the restriction the TB places in the airstream. Infinitely variable valves allow both low duration and low lift, enough to limit airflow but would eliminate any restriction ahead of the valves. By being able to do this, the engine will act like it is running at WOT all the time, using the valves to limit the airflow. The lowest fuel consumption for given amount of power occurs at WOT as it is the time at which there is the least restricton.
I wonder if Nissan is using solenoids as well.
