Just got my 07 G35X - Been doing a ton of research, have always loved infinitis had a 91 Q45, that I drove until it had 175k. But this G is the car for me. Got the Premium, Nav and Tech.

So I want this thing to last forever. The guy at the dealer ship said, you don't need to worry about a "break in" period. The new cars don't need them. (I wasn't sure that was code for drive like a maniac now, so my service department will see you a lot later).

Don't you want to baby all new cars for some time and duration until the engine settles.

The issue here is I got this car largely due to the horses under the hood and I am way tempted to use them sooner rather than later.

So can I gettyup? Or do I have to rein in the horses for now?

Welcome to Nico!

Never trust what the dealer says....lol

Any new engine does indeed have a break-in procedure. Here are some tips:

1. Don't rev the engine past 5k until the first oil change. 2. Don't use cruise control until after the first oil change. Vary your engine speed while on the highway.3. Change the oil and filter around 1000-1200 miles to a good synthetic. Change again at 3k, then every 5k or 4 months for optimal engine life.

After the first oil change don't romp too hard on the engine...try not to hit the limiter. Once you do the second oil change, drive it however you want!

Thanks for the reply! Too late on the cruise control... Used it yesterday playing with the intelligent cruise, but will stop it immediately.

What is a good quality synthetic that I should be using? Also what should I do now to make sure I keep the exterior up. I did the Autobahn and the Simonize. What else? Thanks in advance.

i use some nanotech spray for the leather...it's kinda smelly at first though, but it works great and doesn't make the leather look shiny and greasy. as for your break-in question. i have 2200 miles on my car and still haven't changed the oil, i'm going to wait until the scheduled oil change. also, when i let my dad drive the car when i only had 200 miles he floored it hahaha. personally, i don't think it really matters too much. it's better to treat your car well throughout it's life rather than the first 1400 miles. even a car with over a 100k miles can have clean valves if the oil changes are consistent.

as for what kind of oil, most ppl would probably recommend royal purp or castrol for your synthetic needs.

Lets see...gotta pimp my usual products!

Royal Purple synthetic oil...5W-30 should be good for the northeast.

Zaino polish. Hands down, the best product for keeping the paint perfect! I use their leather cleaner too.

...if you don't have any chips from rocks, do the clear bra for your front bumper!

LMFAO!! I knew that was coming...I was just waiting for it!

The whole break in period is debateable for me IMHO. I have heard mixed things from a tonne of different people. No break in peiod, 1500 mile break in, 2000 mile break in, first oil change break in blah blah blah...

Personally, I've been letting it hang CONSTANTLY in my G since I got it. Hell, the first week I had it I installed all my mods. That also goes for my 05 I had as well. Within 2 weeks I had mod work on it, ripped it everywhere I went and never had a problem other then gas consumption.

i assume your car came with an owner's manual. check it out...it spells out what you should do for proper break-in of the entire vehicle.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!! And for makin me feel like a complete tool at the same time... heh heh heh.

Ok - so I found the kind of, but not so huge, search button and it was useful! Good stuff here versus other boards.

On the reading the manual... I didn't put in in my suitcase - I left my g after 12 hours of ownership at the airport. uughh..

Thanks again good to be here with the pros.

I might be late to this party, but here are my few cents. I am in the G_whizz school of thought. Modern engines are remarkably receptive to running them relatively hard right from the beginning, IMHO.

Here is what I like to do:

1. Change oil and filter many times in the early stages. Once at 500-1000 miles, once at 1500 miles (this one is optional) and then every 3750 miles after that. Regularly, without fail. Use dino oil till you get past 7,500 miles and then switch to a synthetic if you want.

2. Rev the engine up - don't have to hit rpm's past the redline, but hard acceleration (to get those pistons moving and seating themselves properly) to below redline often is important.

3. Till the 1,500 mile mark, don't constantly drive at low rpm's - on the highway, don't drive at a constant engine rotation. You can maintain speed, but do cycle the gears up and down to get some variation in the engine rotation.

I do other crazy early (by some peoples standards) fluid replacements on new cars and find it helps them a lot. Like replacing the differential oil at 10k miles or so, one early transmission flush at 15k miles, power-steering fluid at 10-15k miles, brake fluid every two years or 25k miles, etc., etc. Search for some of my posts on this topic and you will see more details.
