I might be late to this party, but here are my few cents. I am in the G_whizz school of thought. Modern engines are remarkably receptive to running them relatively hard right from the beginning, IMHO.
Here is what I like to do:
1. Change oil and filter many times in the early stages. Once at 500-1000 miles, once at 1500 miles (this one is optional) and then every 3750 miles after that. Regularly, without fail. Use dino oil till you get past 7,500 miles and then switch to a synthetic if you want.
2. Rev the engine up - don't have to hit rpm's past the redline, but hard acceleration (to get those pistons moving and seating themselves properly) to below redline often is important.
3. Till the 1,500 mile mark, don't constantly drive at low rpm's - on the highway, don't drive at a constant engine rotation. You can maintain speed, but do cycle the gears up and down to get some variation in the engine rotation.
I do other crazy early (by some peoples standards) fluid replacements on new cars and find it helps them a lot. Like replacing the differential oil at 10k miles or so, one early transmission flush at 15k miles, power-steering fluid at 10-15k miles, brake fluid every two years or 25k miles, etc., etc. Search for some of my posts on this topic and you will see more details.
