There is a new B&M short shifter for the 350z, one of which will hopefully soon find it's way into my 2004 G35 Sedan 6MT. In the discussion about this product, a question was raised regarding the wisdom of using aftermarket shifters that lack adjustable stops on the shifter assembly itself. Obviously, the oem shifter does not have adjustable stops.

I was under the assumption that most modern MT transmissions already have internal gear stops. If you have a transmission with internal stops and a shifter with adjustable stops, I believe you are supposed to back the shifter stops all the way out - in essence, making them unnecessary. Supposedly, you can even do damage to your internal stop transmission by misadjusting the stops on an adjustable shifter.

Unfortunately, I am missing ESM section C (2004 G35 Sedan - hint, anybody?) so I can't take a look inside the transmission. Maybe someone else can confirm the internal stops, or explain further? Thanks.

Here's a pic of oem vs. B&M...

the oem shifter does not have stops, why are you worried about it?

having improperly adjusted unneeded stops on a transmission that does not require them causes excessive synchronizer wear due to constant pressure on the shift forks/gear hubs.

no modern nissan transmission requires shifter stops to the best of my recollection.

Personally, I am not concerned at all that the B&M shifter does not come with adjustable stops. As we have both noted, Nissan didn't see a need for gear stops on the oem shifter and I wouldn't be track slammin' gears in my sedan (well, not all the time any ways).

However, someone posed a question whether slamming the B&M shifter into gear absent any shifter stops could cause damage to the shift forks. Since the B&M is certainly more heavy duty and, IMO, alot less likely to break off than oem if horsed too hard, I thought it a reasonable question. So now I am looking for confirmation that the transmission incorporates internal gear stops or something similar to prevent shift fork damage from occuring if you get a bit too heavy-handed. Any transmission techs?
