my friend just bought me an underdrive pulley set including new crank, power steering and alternator pulleys. i don't know enough about them, though, so i'm not sure if i want to put them on. can anyone tell me about them who has them or knows someone that has them or has spoken to a tech about them?!?!

what i know: not a real increase in power but allows more hp to be sent to the crank. it will under drive my alternator and power steering.... YIKES!

any and all opinions will be greatly appreciated but i would really like to hear from someone that has them, knows someone that has them, or a tech.

THX in advance!

There are underdrive and there are lightened. Underdrive will lower the number of rotations the alt and PS will receive. Underdrive is generally not good to have it you have a big stereo installation.

The other alternative is a lightened flywheel pully. These are generally the same circumference of the factory pully but is lighter since it is made of aluminum (tho potentially not as light as a UDP). For the Z, I'm not sure if they are made tho I know Unorthodox makes one for the Maxima VQ35.

Of course, the lower the size, the less "parasitic drag" you will have as well from a UDP.

Who made the pulleys? Underdrive pulleys are designed to underdrive the accessories, thus freeing up power by reducing parasitic drag but do not affect the function of the accessories that they are attached to. I'm not a design engineer so I can't tell you exactly how/why they are able to accomplish this specifically, but the aftermarket has been able to improve on the OEM design by coming up with a more efficient pulley. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to install them based upon your post.

Thanks GUYS.... and.... someone's wife?

i guess my next question would be if the pulleys will void my warranty. i'll ask the dealership about that, though. i don't think i'm going to like what they tell me.

i've talked to a few people now and they say go for it. i'm just curious why more of you guys haven't done this. it's relatively inexpensive and fairly easy to install. ANYONE ELSE WANT TO DO IT WITH ME?!?!

I actually have a UDP sitting within 5' of me. I bought it 3.5 years ago and never got around to installing it

The last thing I would want is LESS alternator, power steering, cooling, and especially AC capacity from lower rpms on accessories.
