Hello,

I did a throttle body cleaning yesterday. The car has about 53,000 miles. I saw the DIY video but was not aware that our throttle bodies were this sensitive.

I did the accelerator pedal, throttle valve, and idle air learning procedures but still get a high idle CEL. When I first tried it, I got a CEL right after performing the procedure. So I pulled the battery and did it again.

The CEL went away but the idle was alittle high. I turned off the car and started again and am getting the CEL again. I am in the process of performing another restart.

What do you guys recommend I do? I still have my original warranty on the car. Could the TB be covered under warranty? I would like to hear your opinions. Thanks.

That's a good question. Since you tried to clean it, I don't think its covered under warranty anymore...kinda like electronics that say do not open or else warranty is voided.

What kind of cleaner did you use? I would recommend you use seafoam prob the best stuff out there. Make sure when you do clean your throttle body that you do it at about 3/4 throttle and only use about half the bottle. If done right the car will sound like is dying or will die. No prob just start back up and be sure to drive around. You should get some white smoke dont be alarmed. But make sure you do drive the car around and do not use to much.

It is idling at around 950 rpm. I have driven it around and it feels alittle different. The car also jerks when I am driving in the highway and let go of the pedal. Do you guys think I should try using my warranty?

It cant hurt to see if your warranty covers it, but I would not tell them that you tried to clean it yourself. Try taking off your manifold cover and see if there may be some residue inside.

Sounds like you took the throttle out of alignment. I wouldn't tell the dealership you played with it. They'll likely charge you for it if you do.

I also cleaned my throttle, but I was super careful with it. I'm still trying to figure out the proper procedure. I think it involves disconnecting the battery first.

Probably not worth cleaning our TB's...the benefit isn't worth the risk.

I had a 98 dodge ram back in the day - that was giving my trouble. Took it to the trusty old dealer and they cleaned the throttle body - a day or two later the bad symptons returned. This time I took it to my local mechanic - he put it on his disgnostic and he showed me where it wars - "do not let the throttle body cleaner contact the O2 sensor". Not sure if this is your problem but did you get the cleaner on anything other than the throttle body.

Try resetting the ECU.

Was your car running when you cleaned your throttle body? Some products require your car to be running as you add the cleaner (about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle). Others you have to completely remove the throttle body because it is not good to get them into the engine.
