In general, changing oil often is more important than using synthetic. If you do not want to pay the higher cost of the synthetic, then use a good dino oil and change it every 3000 to 4000 miles (filter too!) and you will be just fine. I'd rather recommend that, than go for very long periods (miles or time) with synthetic.
These were essentially the words of a good oil expert here some time back!
FWIW, I use Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic in my cars and change every 3750 miles regularly without fail. I'd do the same with a good dino oil (Castrol GTX 10W-30 or Chevron Supreme 10W-30 work well in warmer climates like the Bay Area) and wouldn't be concerned - but I use the synthetic since I can afford it (and, yes, I recognize that not everyone can do so).
