I scheduled for my rear differential oil to be changed tomorrow at the dealership. I was wondering should I change to synthetic oil? Take into consideration that I have 80k miles on my car. And if so, what type of oil....im sure if I buy it separate at wally world it would take away from the 150 dollar price they quoted me with over the phone.

Riverside Infiniti quoted me $55/fluid if I brought in my own fluids. I am still thinking about switching to Amsoil Synthetic diff and transmission oil.

If auto trans, use synthetic--my mechanic was adamant about this. If manual, from my experience, use OEM Nissan fluids---works just great.

Ask your Nissan tech. I believe it's 80 weight, but I could be wrong. It also depends wether or not you have a LSD.

I have to disagree. Sorry Jacko. I'm not sure why, but it's widely accepted that Nissan ATF is the best option for your AT. I think the owner's manual states to use it or DIE...well, not that bad, but it's pretty specific about using their fluids for your auto.

I think the differential takes just shy of 3 quarts of oil (75w90 is what I just googled up).

Go to amsoil's website and find a local dealer. They might have some on hand. Amsoil is NOT sold in stores that I am aware of.

My research has yielded that Royal Purple is great for extra power and protection for racing. It is not good for extended drain intervals, because the molybedenum can fall out of suspension and cause problems.

How accurate is that ^ statement? I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it. Especially since Royal Purple emphasizes the power it makes and it's racing applications.

Amsoil does both the extended drain and increase in power (though maybe not as high at RP).

No need to wait any longer. I will probably do a swap once I'm sure my revised engine isn't burning oil

I don't trust Mobil1 now that they have gone from a stage 4 synthetic down to a stage 3.

My understand is that it is only a "synthetic" because they take crude stock and break it down, clean it, then reassemble it.

It's kind of like taking sewer water, cleaning it and selling it as drinking water (which does happen).

Any idea if Royal Purple will produce even better HP than Mobil 1 Synthetic?

I also heard of this. I think the cheating started with Castrol syntec, and then it got worse from there. I beleive royal Purple is a stage 4 distillate.

I think Royal purple might be able to trump Mobil1. I saw an article in one of the car magazines that showed 7hp on the dyno because of RP. Who knows? Dyno results can be played with.

I read that Motul is a stage 5 and Amsoil might also be. I'm not sure.

For rear differential oil, I'd use Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-90 or 75W-140. Either is fine. You need to take two 1qt bottles with you. You don't have to do this at the dealership - any place with a lift will be able to do this with ease in 15 minutes.

(Other discussion in thread: for auto transmissions, I am pretty sure that you need to use the Nissan J Fluid (or equiv) if you want to avoid voiding the transmission warranty. Look at your User Manuals or Service Manuals for more info.)

Just an update, I finally took my car in to get the motor and differential oil change....instead of going to Infiniti i went to my local nissan dealership which charged me nearly half as much as Infiniti of Tampa wanted to charge...I went ahead and bought the royal purple differential oil and I always use Penzoil platinum synthetic motor oil.......nissan charged me 15 dollars including the oil filter and 45 dollars for the differential oil change....I bought two quarts of royal purple for 15 bucks each....all in all im happy with the the level of service I recieved for half the price....I reccomend anyone considering going to Infiniti for service to consider going to Nissan.

Did you ensure that the right GL series was used? I am not sure if it is a GL - 4 or GL - 5 series fluid. Can anyone help me here?

Are you speaking of the differential oil used? If so, it was the royal purple 75w90

I swapped mine out to Royal Purple (75w - 90) full synthetic.

Cost me $11 a liter for 3 liters plus $7-8 bucks for a pump.

I only ended up using 2 quarts though.

Manual says 2 qts I believe...

and DEFINITELY go with synthetic for the gear oil, not for the transmission

I would recommend putting synthetic gear oil in the differentials as soon as possible after to avoid further wear or troublesome break downs. Synthetic oils have proven to cause less wear on mechanical or moving parts. Mobil 1, Royal Purple or Valvoline differential gear oil are all good to use as long as it is synthetic.

After a change to synthetic oil you should closely inspect the differential for leaks after 1k miles. Sometimes synthetic oils can leak because they will clean away any build up on seals that may have been helping to seal but if you change the oil at a lower mileage this is less likely to happen. The synthetic oils will help the seals stay more pliable and be less likely to harden with age.
