Hey Group-Just bought a 2004 G35 with 19,000 miles on it. On my way home, about 20 miles later, my engine light comes on, and all of a sudden I loose all response from my gas pedal. Everything seems to be fuctioning ( all interior lights, power etc), but the car just idles, does not stall. When I push on the gas, I get abosolutley nothing, rpms don't budge, nor does the car. I called roadside assistance to pick it up, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or have any idea what would cause this. Thanks. Never experienced anything like this, and I'm bummed becuase I just bought it !

Take the vehicle to an Infiniti dealer. With a mileage like that it should still be under warranty.

That's gotta make you feel confident about your new purchase. With drive-by-wire, I have no idea what it could be. For all I know a serious emissions problem could prompt the ECU to put it in to the ultimate safe mode and deactivate the throttle body!

Please let us know how it turns out!

Ok, just talked to Infiniti service, and the pedal sensor is shot in the drive-by wire configuration. They said there was no way to avoid it, it does not mean that I got lemon ( good news for me). Now, I'm just uncertain with all the electronics in today's cars. I'm curious as to how long these senors normally last. Do they last the life-time of the car ( 150,000 miles )? This certainly does not make for safe operating. I couldn't even imagine trying to accelerate through an intersection and these sensors give out! Or being in bumper to bumper 70 MPH traffic. Luckily I was on country road when my car lost acceleration.

I wondered when this would happen to someone. As a computer guy, I distrust computers. Actually, I tend to distrust all electrons and anything else I cant actually see.

The legal life of a car is 100,000 miles. The design point is above this to make sure most things survive the warranty period 6/70k with minimal expense to factory.

What more do you want expect from a Basic entry level luxo sport vehicle, bottom of the Infiniti brand........and very few dollars above average new car cost for 2005.

Very surprised since there are 2 parallel TPS as a backup. Something mechanical in how they attach probably?

I'd think he should expect better than that at 19K! I'd also be surprised if the components on the flagship Q are much different. After all my Q has the same door switches as an '85 Sentra. Standardization saves $$.

In any case I'd be really interested to know the failure mode. As soon as I heard about the drive-by-wire concept for the 02Q I wondered if it was designed to fail "closed" if there was a failure. It's better to coast to a stop vs. unexpected WOT! Still dangerous in certain situations, but not as dangerous I guess.

Please keep us posted on how it failed and if you get any indication that it's a common issue.

Personally, the G35, is not the bottom of the barrell. So I guess All BMW 300 series are crap cars too? Or the Audi A4 as well? I have no idea the how the sensor failed. I'll get more info when I pick-it up today. Just kind of weird, the car won't go just because of a sensor. Drive-by wire technolgy will be most vehicles in the nxt 5 years. I don't know if thats a good thing.

[Well, the A4 might be pretty darn close bottom of the barrel... while the 3-series is highly regarded.]

I suspect that in the future, tow truck providers will be making a lot of money.
